9800 crashes pc after driver install and reboot.

Hi guys,

I recently upgraded from my nvidia 5600fx to a 3dConnect 9800 Pro.
Now after uninstalling the NVidia drivers and installing the 9800 everything seemed ok, but after the reboot the login screen came up (XP btw) I log in, it loads a couple of the startup programs and as soon as the ATI Control Panel attempts the pc screen goes a very dark grey and the pc stops completely - Caps Lock keys freeze etc. After another reboot it works but very slowly, icons refresh on the desktop visably one at a time. No games will play. here's my spec

Windows XP Pro
2.6 P4
Advent PCworld Motherboard (no idea of manufacturer) AGP 4X max
Unknown Power supply (no indications marked on PSU)
Onboard sound
Netgear FA311 Network card
1GB Memory

What I've tried....

Fast write is turned off
AGP set to 128mb in bios

Turning off hardware acceleration remedies my slow icon desktop problem but games still won't run.

I've tried many combinations of driver install. The last most thorough was...

Uninstall all drivers
Reboot in safe mode
Deleted any ATi directories
Cancelled all HW wizards and ran Driver Cleaner
Rebooted in normal mode
XP automatically detects cards and installs basic drivers
Install Latest Catalyst drivers (Ive tried the ones supplied with Card and same prob)
Installs fine and reboots to the same crash.
Setting Gurp to retest produces the same problem after a reboot.

Anyone got any ideas b4 i haul it back to the shop?

Cool!

hello, when you switch drivers from one version to the other whether it be nvidia and expecially ati you need to use a third party uninstall app.,like driver cleaner 3.0 from this site.follow the instuctions to the letter.then reinstall the drivers and it should be all good.hope this works.make sure you uninstall from safe mode like the app. says.later

tried and failed

No luck - I have noticed that i can get (SOME) games running if i go into troubleshooting and drop the hardware acceleration down 4 notches. This fixes desktop issues but also stops the ati drivers running (A message pops up to say the ati drivers have been disabled) :P Could it be an issue from moving from nvidia to ati? I can't imagine why. Im currently removing every codec I have installed, anything graphical related. I'll follow the usual procedure and then install the... omega drivers to see if they work... :P Any other tips guys~? Im desperate.

hmm

I took a hunt trhu my registry and under system under all control sets 001 - 003 they have nvida 5600fx setup. I've no understanding of this. Could this effect my problem? Also could the fact that my card blew and I never uninstalled the fx5600 until i had the ati Installed effect the problem? I really don't want to have to reformat (sigh)
