PowerColor 9800 PRO AIW
Okay stupid question.
I have a ATI PowerColor AIW 9800 PRO card with 128 MB but still I do not notice a huge inprovement in performance over my Winfast GeFore 4 MX 440 when playing UT 2004. Now I know this will be a stupid question. My Asus MB only supports 4x AGP will I notice a significant difference if I swapped out my MB with one that supports 8x? (AMD 2200+ with 512 RAM) I tested with 3DMARK 03 and scored around 5100 on default settings. So my question is "Is it worth upgrading my MB to one that supports 8x AGP" Otherwise I might as well sell it buy a ATI standalone card and a seperate HD TV card as the ATI does not support Digital IN I believe Thanks in advance Michael. |

moved to ATI forum, as this isn't really a TV/video-capture question
![]() Well, the 5100 score sounds about right for the 9800, so I have to ask: Do you notice the slow performance only in UT2004? Have you tried re-installing the game? When you upgraded your video card did you reformat/reinstall Windows? If not, did you at least completely clean out the nVidia drivers with DriverCleaner? To your other question, this is not a AGP 4x vs. 8x issue, so do not go out and spend money on a new mobo, if that's your only reason. The difference in performance between AGP 4x and 8x, on a normally functioning system, is unnoticeable and barely measurable. And lastly, no question is stupid, that helps you learn

The machine is pretty much a clean Windows XP/SP1 install. I still need to run DriverCleaner to get rid of the nVidia drivers from the previous install.
UT 2004 is really the only game I have time to play so it is hard to say. I set the drivers to 4x AA and 16 aniso and it seems the performance picked up within the game. ie: not choppy frames when multiple people in one room @ 1024 I didn't think going from 4x to 8x AGP was going to do much as I don't believe the throughput is even reached on 4x. (I could be wrong though) Will do some more testing and post any findings. |

to make this easier
The setup for HDTV on a computer can be tricky. It depends heavily on system resources when capture with HDTV through the system. Although I do not currently own a HDTV Tuner card, I have a close friend who has one. He had to route the HDTV signal through his AIW card due the lack of processor power (Pentium 4 2.4C to be exact). The system would use 100% cpu power to buffer the signal of the HDTV card (no proc on card). By running the HDTV through the Videocard it used the GPU to process the imaging from the HDTV signal. I hope this help out.
I can't wait for an X800 XT All-in-Wonder with FM, HDTV and VIVO if this is made this would be very nice. later pete |

Thanks for the info Pete.
The problem is more related to the game playing scenario. I tried different versions of the Catalyst drivers 3.1 and 4.4 while using DriverCleaner between each installs and found no diference. On a AMD 2400+ with 512 RAM I would of thought my FPS would be around 45 at 800x600 with partial UT effects on. My 3dMARK2003 (5100) is about right comparing with reviews of similar cards on this site and the game has been re-installed Maybe I'm expecting to much from the card ![]() If anyone can point me in the right direction of maybe a good UT2004 forum it would be appreciated. Yes a X800 with those features would be nice |
