If I were you i'd go with option 1, you'll have an all around better system.

Hey! I agree that number 1 is the one to go with! But! You should consider bying an AMD 64 3000+ and mobo k8t800 pro w/ PCI/AGP lock, and new 3200 memory and then buy the 9800pro! That´s if you have the doe!
BTW Wellcome to DH mate!

a 9800pro will have no problems with HL2, Doom 3 and Far Cry with respectable frame rates, I'd say option 1 aswell. Worth considering 1gb ram and also worth considering an a64 3000 - if you can warrant the extra expendature.

well... that's the best for most people... tbh... I would get the x800pro myself - lol

When I got my 9700 a year last January - I had a pretty crappy system:

AMD 2000
256MB PC2100
60GB 5400rpm

... and I went and bought a 9700 - lol - that was overkill for that system - but still brought me pleasure - for overall performance the average mobo/cpu/gpu is the best bet - but for that little kick up the ass - the x800pro

the amd 2400 isn't a horrendous chip - and you have 512mb ram - perhaps an x800pro and an extra 512mb ram?

I dunno - I'm just listing a few options you have here - all depends on what you want.

R u sure about that? I am assuming they all would run fine, IF most of the settings aren't on the highest, right?

Well, I'd go with option 1. It will lead the way to your future upgrades and perhaps when the X800 comes down or maybe when you think about upgrading, a simple swap of the VGA cards is all that will be needed. Also, if you go with option 2, the problem with that will be you won't be getting the best experience you could get with it. I'm not sure if I'm 100% correct or not, but won't the other lacking features hold back the X800?

Yes... well... judging on the performance of early builds it will do marvelously - look at the performance in Far Cry - Half Life 2 will run better than Far Cry - and Doom 3 will probably be similar - although most likely better as the majority of the game is set in doors in close confinements.

So... I'm about 99% sure that the 9800pro could run these games at the highest settings on a respectable resolution (1024x768 minimum)
