Novice here- Question on 9600SE
I'm not a heavy PC gamer- but would really like to enjoy MS FS2004. I do not have a 'gamer's PC. I have a Sony VAIO RX850
2.4ghz/Win XP/ 512mbDDR. Being that it was not a gamer's PC, it came originally w/ SiS chipset- at 32mb-hardly a graphics wonder. Playing FS2004 on this set up was not that enjoyable- wanted to enjoy the scenery, the 'real' life effects of the environment on the simulated aircrafts. It was choppy - unless i lower the display settings- which beats the purpose. On med-high display settings, the game can be choppy at times, or the background graphics sort of 'surges' which is annoying (the ground below surges fast/slow/fast/slow - weird Today i purchased the ATI Radeon 9600 SE- and installed in the appropriate AGP bus. Followed all instructions- from installing smartgart drivers for the SiS chipset as suggested. Now, the game's boasted scenery and graphics is very apparent-BUT- the "surging effect" is still there- even worse i think- even at lowest display settings. I have the latest DX9.0b installed, and latest Catalyst 4.6. But still to no avail. Did i get a "mediocre" CARD? Now that i've installed it in my PC- can i still return it and exchange for a "better" one? maybe a 9600 pro? or 9800? dont really want to spend that much money.. but at 140.00- i was expecting a little better performance from the built-in chipset-- What should i do, or check first before completely giving up? Erick

the 9600se is a value card, but with your setup there shouldnt be graphic corruption like you said. Try downloading the latest omega drivers from: www.omegadrivers.net
Uninstall the old driver set, run driver cleaner which can be found right here on DH.com, install the latest omegas and give it a shot. |

jsx,
I'm assuming that you mean to uninstall the ATI drivers first, then run Driver Cleaner? Is there a step by step for non computer savvy individuals like me. I mean, i did manage to install the card on myown- it does work-- but perhaps there's some driver issue that is making the game- surge (or actually more like- pulsing- i'm not sure if its the "redraw" or something--the details of the games is there-- but it's just that annoying 'pulsing or surging' effect. Also- could it be clashing w/ the previous driver update on the SiS chipset? I upgraded to what i thought is or was the driver update for SiS.. I also did loaded the AGP drivers for SiS just so you know before i installed ATI (followed the step by step guide) I dont seem to have a problem when booting up the windows system (like after restart) it does however hangs a few more seconds (at blank screen) before showing the windows xp logo, and main screen..but nevertheless, it seems to work fine. Thanks for all your help

Okie doke heres what to do. Go to control panel -> add/remove programs -> select anything related to 'ati' and uninstall or remove -> restart -> run driver cleaner and select 'ati' -> restart again -> then install the latest omega drivers -> restart one last time.

it could be something as simple as reinstalling the 4.6 cats...just install them over top of themselves. also try turning fastwrites on and off in your ati control panel.
ne ways... for driver cleaner he left out a few steps lol 1. d/l the newest omega drivers from http://www.omegadrivers.net, but don't install them and d/l drivercleaner from http://www.hardwareheaven.com 2. uninstall ATI like he told u to. 3. unplug your modem 4. restart into safe mode (for XP start menu, run, msconfig, boot.ini tab, check safe boot near the left side click ok)it will reboot and look ugly, cancel out of the driver installation wizard that will pop up 5. run driver cleaner and clean everything in the menu (if u have an nforce chipset u'll need the drivers handy for when u reboot) 6. click on tools and go to cab cleaner, run it on all of the things in the list...it'll take a while 7. repeat step 4, but uncheck safeboot this time 8. restart and install the drivers that you d/led 9. hook your modem back up and enjoi

st thunder,
I was about to start the instructions that you guys have provided. However, I am also thinking that perhaps the SiS chipset driver may have something to do w/ the issue. I can recall before i installed ATI, that the game also did the 'pulsing, or jerking movement-- I'm thinking of also uninstalling the driver updates i've done w/ the SiS (thinking i can make it better way back before i thought of buying a new Video Card) Can i do that also at the same time when uninstalling ATi? or do i have to finish uninstalling ATI first, restart and then uninstall the update drivers for SiS? i'm thinking that it maybe confusing itself w/ all the driver updates..?? e

I would just exchange the card for a little better one, like the 9800 or 9600xt. The one you bought really is a value/low end card. I think you paid far too much for it too...

i would uninstall the video drivers...then the chipset drivers, re-install the chipset drivers, re-install directX 9.0b, and then re-install the vid card drivers

i unistalled the drivers/and all its components for ATI radeon.. then uinstalled the
video card physically. Then i tried to 'roll' back on the driver update for the SiS chip- thinking its a culprit.. BUT i think i made a very bad error-- i now get this message The procedure entry point?getmonitorname@CSiSTool@SAHPADHK@Z Could not be located in dynamic link library SiSapcom.dll I tried to reinstall a driver from SiS (previous version) but it hangs at 70%. However, when i rebooted, the system shows the driver is the version i loaded for SiS. Anyways, the games, Dvd, all other stuff is working- just getting that message now at restart. I reinstalled the AGPdriver forSis (my question is, do i disable the SiS driver? and how?) installed omega drivers, but gameplay is still having that pulsing graphics effects.. I can see the nice features of the graphics- but it is pulsating, or "stuttering"? I thought perhaps its the FS2004--but it also does it on other games.. I've now unistalled the ATi rAdeon 9600se again.. and it gonna go back to Fry's hopefully they will accept it back. only had it for 3 days now.. Tried everythign i can think of..but to no avail. e

You can tweak the vid card all you want, but you are still going to have the 'stutters'. FS 2004 is a very RAM hungry application, and your 512 meg just isn't enough.
If you go to this link: http://www.snohio.net/~ssouth1248/RAF662/ you will see 3 screenshots that I took in 3 different flight sims. GCS0009 is from FS 2004, 0013 is from CFS3, and 0014 is from CFS2. The pics are pretty big, and you will have to do some scrolling to see all of them. I have 2 monitors, so I opened Windows Task Manager to the PERFORMANCE tab to look at CPU and Page File usage, and RAMBOOSTER to monitor RAM usage on my secondary monitor, and then took the screenies. You will see that with 1Gig of memory, that I only had 53% free in FS 2004. CFS3 is even worse with only 30% free. Notice that the Sims ALL want 100% of the CPU, so make sure that you aren't running any other progs in the backround, as that will only agrivate the problem. You can see my specs below.

9600SE sucks. The problem is the 64 bit ram. I wish I have 9550 instead.
9550 can turn into 9600pro and it is only $70-90. |
