Exclusive: ATI withdraw Catalyst 4.7 from Futuremark certification

I have been in talks today with ATI's Terry Makedon (Senior Product Manager) and he wished to make a statement on Driverheaven.

“In CATALYST 4.7 there is a slight rendering bug found on game test 3 of 3DMark03. This has been documented in an InfoBase article found here. Due to the high standards we place on ourselves in regards to our driver quality we have decided to ask our users not to use CATALYST 4.7 with 3DMark03. In fact we request that Futuremark disqualify this driver set from the official approved driver list. CATALYST 4.8 will have the rendering bug fixed. This rendering bug does not impact 3DMark scores with CATALYST 4.7, but we prefer our users use a driver without the corruption for the best possible RADEON experience."

<IMG src="http://www.hardwareheaven.com/zardon/terry2.jpg" width=350 height=206 border="0">

We have been testing forthcoming ATI drivers internally and personally I feel they are going from strength to strength, there are some massive changes coming and some great improvements, its going to be a strong year for Catalyst - Zardon

It's good to hear that Ati respects its customers enough to do this... even though the new Nvidia cards look slightly better hardware wise, I'm considering getting an Ati one, just because of their better customer relationships.

Hey that's my problem

I have that problem. Good for ATI to announce the problem and clear themselves of any piece of fuel which those fanboys out would love to use in order to attack ATI.

hehe yeah good marketing there i say though by the look of the recent doom 3 benchmarks the X800 Pro and XTPE is getting smashed by the NV ultra and GT`s the GT`s are killing the X800 Pro`s aswell as the XTPE X800 Cards i dont like those benchmarks at all but performance speaks for its self in those benchmarks i was hopeing my X800 Pr0 was going to be good in doom 3 but by those marks its very very limited in doom 3 i mean 30fps in doom is going to suck aint it :/ just hope the ati boys can get some performance OPGL drivers out becuse thats where the ATI cards are realy lacking the RAW power NV`s cards do with there AWSOME OPGL performance. goodluck Terry but i will have faith that you will supprize us all and unleash a monster driver heh

ya, i never seen nvidia do a damn thing like that, nor would they care. ATI is a better compainy. however the pricepoint of the GT card looks good compaired to ATI, however ATI does have the better hardware, it does both compeat really nicely tho. openGL is yet to be improved yet in ATI, but u will see soon.

lets just say there are a lot more games that are directX which ATI has a greater advantage in, and less games will be in openGL but openGL is nice because its multiplatform and used for modeling etc.

we will see an advancement in both openGL and DirectX soon, u will see.

MindlessOath i hope so becuse for th enext 3 years we are going to see a very very huge amount of games comming out that are going to be useing the Doom 3 emgine OPGL so there for something has to happen quicky otherwize ATI will loose out in the long run as all the newbies and what not rate there card buying skills from reviews and ATI are not looking good imho at the moment when it comes to NV OPGL performance im realy just trying to warn people and i to want to see better OPGL performance as DOOM 3 was the main reason i upgraded so fast tot he next ati generation X800 Pro as that was the only card out at the time and there was not a ATI x800 XT in sight to be found anyway even the XTPE`s are looking pritty small in Doom 3 benchamrks aswell so all round ATI realy has to improve there OPGL performance as at the minute it stinks when under doom 3 playing and most other OPGL games aswell the performance just is not up there at the minute thats all im trying to point out and i bet ATI know this already so i expect there working hard to get something out to us soon before DOOM 3 ships i also hear ATI and rewriteing from the ground up new OPGL drivers so it may take a little time or even better 4.8 new OPGL ???? may we just be lucky heh could be :P

we are going to see at most 5 games using doom3 engine. some others that will be using openGL in general. BTW its not like those benchmarks revolve around u.. u can still play 640x480 or 1024x768 which most players play in anyways at decent frame rates. even with full stuff on. the next drivers will not include openGL stuff, not evne the 4.9's i dont belive, but the 4.8 will have a special treat in it. just wait to see some reviews coming out soon. mabe tomarrow.

well, i just know stuff, i visit a lot of forums man. lots of info is already around. - go check the other forums out, beyond3d, rage3d, driverheaven, nvnews and all sorts of others.

im not a beta tester but i will try out for one soon... but that means i cant say much on the issues at all, being under NDA would keep me quiter than a mouse. im already being quite as is.

but basically we are in for a treat.. nothing really special, dont get me wrong... but it will shut up those damn fanboys for a while (or will it?)

Don't think so X800 pro $399 MSRP X800 XT $499MSRP looks pretty good to me

If you talking about price gouging by 3rd party's (retailers) due to a low supply (memory part shortages) that’s not ati's fault they can't build cards with out parts.. And since every body wants one...they can't build them fast enough...

ATI sells them for a fixed price (much less then MSRP) what the retailers charge is not their puppy, nor their responsibility...

When supply is good most cards will go for $100 or more LESS then MSRP

Simple economics … supply and demand

Good to see ATI being straightforward and up-front. ATI's OGL perf. sucks monkey testes but their DX performance is stellar. Hopefully it'll turn around, but, it's been soo long that I'm not really holding my breath. Doom3 is gonna run better on the Nvidia Hardware, perhaps HL2 will run better on ATI, then they can have a big battle. Either way you're new card is a rocking one X800 Pro XT, 6800GT, 6800U whatever. Enjoy.

1st off, this is a discussion on the 4.7 release of the cats not working with the 3dmark2003 benchmark. i gave up on these benchmarks long ago with all the driver optimization that nvidia included. it used to be an apples to apples type thing, but not anymore.

but the discussion has turned into a 'x800 not good enough for doom3' thread somehow. i dont know if any of you can remember but a while ago (maybe 6-9 months?) Kyle at Hardocp released the internal testing results that nvidia had with doom3. basically they found that the nvidia cards played the game extremely well with the fps getting up into the 50-70 arena, HOWEVER the Ati cards all performed at the exact same level of 35fps or something stupid like that, no matter the driver used. basically, it demonstrated that ATi drivers where not ready for doom 3 while nvidia's had been optimized for doom3.

what i am trying to get at here is that the game is not offically released yet. john carmack made a statement somewhere along the lines of 'we have not leaked the game to nvidia/ati for driver optimization' (look at the Hardocp benchie article), so i am just guessing that neither nvidia/ati have had time to fully ultilize their respective drivers with this game engine AS YET.

there are going to be multiple driver releases from ati and nvidia with path optimizations in time, the game is only around the corner, but it isnt the be all and end all of ATi just yet. their hardware is excellent, just give the drivers sometime to catch up to make full use of the game, and then we will see how the X800 goes against it.

doom 3 is going to be an excellent game, i played the leaked alpha from the e3 a few years back. even at 10x7 i dont think that anyone is going to be dissapointed. everything looks like clay-animation
