Default Post AIW Radeon 8500 Lockups - possible fix but more probs...

Hi there,

I bought a retail version of the ATI All-In-Wonder Radeon 8500 128MB a little while ago, and haven't been able to get the thing working well at all. I get lock-ups, crashes, or reboots when running any game, using the TV-tuner, DVD, Video Capture or Editing software, and everywhere else that the graphics seem to really come into play. The system runs fine beyond this but whenever I use something that would seem to tax the video card I get the problems. All error messages either point to the AIW card and/or it's driver files.

Well it's weeks later and still no complete resolution after trying everything (and I mean everything), here is a short list - drivers (all available from 1st AIW 8500 set to most current), updates, fresh installs, new card RMA'd from ATI, BIOS options, chanting, prayer vigils... lol.

Just for the heck of it, I decided to go into BIOS and change my processor speed from 2533Mhz down to 1900Mhz. Now I haven't had a chance to go through everything yet, but I was able to play a game for hours so it seems to have "solved" the problem. Incidentally the change reduced the FSB to 400Mhz from 533Mhz.

I say solved, but not really, becuase I didn't pay for a 2.53Ghz only to run it at 1.9Ghz!!! My question is this processor possibly too fast for the video card? Or is there possibly something else I should be looking at? I.E. Motherboard, Processor, Memory???

Here system specs:

Case: Lian-Li PC68
Power Supply: Antec 430W TruePower
Processor: Pentium 4 2.53GHz
Motherboard: ASUS P4T533
Memory: 2x256MB RDRAM RIMM 4200 (512MB Total) (non-ECC versions)
OS: Windows XP Professional
Video: ATI All-In-Wonder Radeon 8500 128MB
Sound Card: SoundBlaster Audigy Platinum
Hard Drive: Western Digital 120GB Special Edition
CDRW: TDK VeloCD 48x16x48x48
DVD-ROM: Toshiba SD-M1612
NIC: Intel Pro/100 S

I am dumbfounded because all the testing and hair pulling I've done over the last few weeks now seems like it was just a waste of time. I assume there is a problem somewhere and I think the fact that it works at a reduced speed limits this to either Mobo, CPU, Memory, or Video Card. Ambient CPU temp is 36C so I don't believe that to be an issue.

If you can offer any suggestions or ideas, your help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.
