Gigabyte GV-R80P256D Heat Problems?

Hello, I just recently bought the Gigabyte GV-R80P256D (X800 Pro) and im somewhat happy with it. I owned ATi 9800XT before which had the thermal monitor on it as well as overdrive. This card however has neither of those features. The problem I am having is what I think is related to heat. My 9800XT used to spin the fan up to a higher RPM when it got hotter but the fan on the Gigabyte spins the same all the time. So when I am playing FarCry at default settings (Low) the game freezes and sometime the computer also, it got alot better since I opened up the case lid so the heat could get out. I experienced no problems with my older card so I am asking you, especially those who have the exact card is this normal? Is the fan supposed to turn up RPM when more heat is coming from the gpu?

Thanks!

I was having the same problem with the exact same card. I was overclocking the card to 555/540 and Far Cry was crashing all the time usually within a couple of minutes. When I underclocked the card down to 540/540 farcry ran fine, so I to thought it was because of heat.

Using the new ATItool 0.21 there is an option to overide the speed of your fan. I overided my fan speed to 100% all the time and I can now run farcry at 555/540 no problem. According to ATItool I can now clock my core upto 570. However at this speed Far Cry just locks up my system or I get a VPU recovery if I turn this feature on. Strange thing is at 570 I do not get any atifacts at all and my card doesn't get any hotter than 65c under load, so I think it is a lack of core voltage.
