a question about CS performance
hey guys, i've been having a problem lately with good old cs 1.6...actually, i've been having this same problem for 2 years now.
i have two computers i use for CS, my pain pc and my laptop. now i don't have my x800xt right now so i'm using my 9550XT in my main pc. you can see how the two computers match up. i'm running the same drivers, the same quality settings, and virtually the same video card. so here's my question. why is it that i get a solid, 100 fps on my laptop, and between 50-70 fps on my main pc? they both have been formatted, and like i said, the same drivers for both of them. the main pc has less programs running in the background and a better hard drive. so why oh why is cs performing so badly on that pc? even when i had my x800xt i only got 85 fps in CS. (no vsync) is it my processors fault? is my barton 2800+ really that inadequate? the only other thing i can think of would be the mobo, but i didn't think that motherboards made that big of a differance. also i had the same problem on my nforce220/440 mobo. so please...tell me what i can do to make this better! and please, save no responses like "cs sucks, i hated it since i first played it years ago" i wouldn't even ask that you not post stuff like that, but i've seen it happen a lot.

hmmm your RAM seems fine...the only idea I would have is that maybe the laptop has a better sound hardware sollution which is improving your framerate. that MIGHT be it.

my sound on my laptop is conexant AMC (never heard of them).
in my other pc i've had my onboard sound and an ess solo 1 (old sound card) niether did anything for performance. i would have suspected my hard drive, but my HDD in my main pc is a 7200rpm 2mb cache, and the one in the laptop is 5400RPM, don't know the cache size.

*except as shown here read my findings http://www.hardwareheaven.com/gaming-discussion/42388-counter-strike-fps-problems-net-code-game-related.html also you do realize the game automatically caps the fps @ 85 you have to turn off v-sync in your video drivers, and in your game. then you must also up the FPS cap wich is set at default 85. I don't play CS. 1.6 to many cheats and hacks for that 5-6 year old game. my best advice for you? delete CS 1.6 ... Buy CS: Sourse it's way better

i have source, but most of my friends still play 1.6
also it automatically caps at 72 fps, not 85 :P lol i honestly had problems with 1.5 and 1.3 as well as 1.6. for me there wasn't any change other than re-adjusting to the firing behavior of the guns. in source i also have problems though, only 35 fps average when i had my x800xt. that's at 1024x768, no aa or af, high details on everything else. that was beta though. i also only got 35 fps with my 9800pro. now in source i get between 35 and 85 fps with my 9550XT. i only get 25 fps if my cpu isn't overclocked. i think i may have either a defective processor or a very bad mobo. that's all i haven't changed really. EDIT what i'm trying to find out here is not what's wrong with CS, it's what's wrong with my desktop PC. it just doesn't make sense to me that two pc's with similar graphics cards have such major performance differences. i have worse ram in my laptop, and less of it, and less memory for my graphics card, and lower clock rates for my card...but then i have a better processor in my laptop. so that really just narrows it down to my processor and mobo. i really did skimp on my desktop's mobo. it only cost me 56 dollars at the time. the reason i think that my processor might be defective is because it usually scores a few thousand points lower in benchmarks than other barton 2800+'s. in sandra it is the closest to other 2800's, but still on the lower end of the spectrum. with my x800xt my aquamark score was around 36,000...i tend to blame that on my processor.
