EEK! CS & frame drops with x800

Hello

u are my last chance.

I play Counterstrike, and i changed in my system the vga from Geforce Nvidia TI4200 to ATI Radeon x800 pro (256MB).

I reinstalled my whole system after i get my new card, but now i have frame drops in action situations like an fire fight. about 50 ~

My System fresh installed:

Windows XP Sp.2 (no virus)
P4 2,6 GHz (not HT)
Mainboard Gigabyte 8ihxp (with i850e chipset) chipsetdriver installed no performance boost.
512 MB Rdram (1066 MHz)
ATI Radeon x800 pro 256 MB Ram (CATALYST Windows XP 4.11 incl. Framework .net Version 1.1
Audigy2 Soundcard

I tried it with omega drivers no performance boost. Changing the VGA Details from quality to performance affects nothing just a ugly picture

ATI Support anwsered with a default txt.
Gigabyte dosnt wrote back for an bios update. I guess the bios update is my last hope, but i have no floppy and the online bios update dosnt work, so it could take a while

u have any ideas ? thanks in advance for your help.

So you formatted everything and reinstalled?

What settings are you running the game at? In Options> Video> Advanced, make sure all the settings are at recommended levels for your system, there should be an * that tells you which are best. Also check in the driver contol panel and make sure all the sttings are marked 'Let the application decide'.

That probably won't resolve your problem though because you have a great card. Also, what resolution are you playing at?

If all else fails you can try the 4.12 betas.

yes i formatted everything and reinstalled.
i repeat its counterstrike 1.6 (not the hl2 engine) and with the old card it worked fine.
after i tried all video settings out, (from performance and quality) i decided to let all standard and "let the application decide". execpt vsync which i turned off.

i play since 5 years @ 800 x 600 and 16bit.

i will try the 4.12 but i dont believe it would solve my problem. thx for ur help.

i hate the old HL gaming engine, a mx440 can get better fps than a x800xtpe...it's just a screwy engine.

Hmm, that tells me there are still issues with the ATI drivers or with the D3D driver that comes with HL1. HL1 a screwy engine? it's a modified Q2 engine. I fail to see how HL1 can drag performance of a X800 card. (i wonder, how the heck people can afford these cards, give my left nut to have one, but no way i can afford one. nor do i want to give my left nut.)

we're using the opengl drivers for CS, the D3D drivers are crap that come w/ CS.

if you don't want to blame the crappy fps on the engine, then blame it on it's faulty net code, or on the bad mapping or texture optimization. don't get me wrong, i love CS, but it's just not put together well.

There gets to a point where the latest video card is so advanced that for some reason it leaves behind whatever optimizations or settings made it good with older games. Personally I'd suggest you pick up CS:S and get some good use out of your new card =D

Seriously though, my CS:S FPS are as good, if not better than, my CS ones, both at 1280x1024 with highest settings.

i will say this, the two best cards for CS, in my experience, are the mx440, and the ti4600.

there are 2 commands in the cs console that will fix this, I experienced the same problem

ati_subdiv 0

and another ati_ something-or-other which you should also set to 0, after this, it should improve it mucho

Try this
Close Steam

Open your Config.cfg located in C:\Program Files\Steam\Steamapps\Youremail\counter-strike\cstrike\

add the following line

fps_max "101"

Restart Steam and Launch 1.6
