Cool! Best 9800 pro mod?

Hi guys,

I'm back again. Thanks for all your help with the athlon overclocking. My systems got a new lease of life

I'm just looking at a project for me and my dad to work on for my graphics card. Ive got loads of pci slots free and a fair amount of room above the card. (Pics on request)

At the moment my 9800 pro is fully stock speeds and has an artic mod rev 3 on it.

I get artifacts on half life 2 with flash light on some textures and in 3dmark 2003.

I'm not confident that its being kept cool.

I'm looking for inspiration for some nice cool ram sinks and a hsf I can strap on the card to really cool it.

I picked up a coolermaster cooldrive 6, it has 4 temperate nodes. I'm wondering where would be the best place(s) to put them.

As always I appricate everyones help and look up to you guys for guidence and experience

Many Thanks

I used the stock AMD heatsink that came with my Athlon XP. it is REALLY good. if you feel the back of the GPU normally its very warm and when gaming can even be uncomfortable to touch at times...with the AMD heatsink it is STONE COLD! I could overclock much more easily after that. Seriously look into using that heatsink or perhaps a P4 1U heatsink. those can be pretty good too.

Coincidentally I just fitted a new Zalman Dual Pipe kit for my 9800pro a few weeks ago. Now I'm overclocking at 100%x the 9600 and can maintain core temps of 40 degrees Celsius. The package comes ready to assemble with dual copper piping, a very sexy looking block cover and a full set of sinks for both sides of the memory. I also picked up the optional Zalman 80mm fan that is side mounted to the cover. Fry's electronics carries tons of stock on both the kit and the fan, or if youre on the savvy side, your local computer show will definately have them. I bought both at my local show and the total cost came out to be 35 bucks. I would recommend this.

I've got a stock XP heatsink + cooler sitting here. How do you go about fitting it on? Have you got any pictures / instructions or tips ?

what about ramsinks?

I used that one and I think there was an even better one at rojakpot but I cant find it right now.

btw when you reach the part about the masking tape, I suggest finding something to tap the holes instead of trying to get a pen through that tiny tiny hole. believe me, its a challenge.

Dont worry that the heatsink is different than yours. It works basically the same way.

oh yeah and dont worry about removing the shim OR grinding down the heatsink(you'd do one or the other not both. but if you have a 9800 just dont do EITHER) it really isnt nessesary. Just make sure that you clean the top surface of the VPU pretty well. If you have one of those that used pink thermal tape, then just worry about getting it off the top of the VPU and not the sides(the sides dont matter).

Anyway one more thing...when screwing the heatsink on, you'll want something to insulate it so that the screw doesnt make contact with some other metal. I suggest using cardboard or paper or something. If you ave screw insulators, then GREAT! even better. Anyway when tightening it, do it VERY slowly. You may overtighten it and the card will start to bend...that is the point when you've gone TOO FAR! back up a bit and you'll be fine. (I always dread hearing a loud crack when screwing these things in)

lastly: I hope you dont want your PCI ports anymore because I only have access to 2 now.

there yah go! thats the rojak one. says its for radeon 9500s but its really informative and the 9500 is pretty close in board configuration to the 9800.

System Specs

I have a Built by ATI 9800 pro with the artic cooler rev 3. I ordered some cheap ocz ramsinks, Its a pretty tight fight between the bottom sink and the system Ram but i can get 465/382 out of it w/ no artifacts in half life 2 or 3d mark 03/05. Did you make sure the arctic cooler was switched on high?
