9800 PRO performance

I know there's about 20 of these threads, but it's really bothered me a lot. Recently I got a Built by ATi 9800PRO 128mb 256bit (or so read the box). I upgraded from a 9600 PRO, and have reinstalled windows twice since (though I did not format C, since I dont belive in the conspiracy theories). However, I notice that in the VST in CS:S I only get 65fps. I have done all those steps people use; uninstalling, using driver cleaner, installing mobo drivers. No difference. I've tried out 3dmark03, and with my card OCd a bit I get a score of 5705. I'm running HL2 at 1024x768 all on max. I have seen most 9800 pro owners with 2500+s getting 80fps + in this bench with the same specs, so why are mine so low? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Peace,

My specs:
350W Antec PSU
Athlon XP 2400+ (2.0)
512 DDR
R9800PRO 128MB DDR (420/700) (AGP at 4x, I hear it only makes a 2-4 fps diff)

Edit: Also, here are my volt readings:
VCore 1.66
3.3v 3.17
5v 4.92
12v 12.22
-12v -13.02
-5v -5.1
VBAT 3.26
5VSB 4.92

VOlt readings make no diff on fps - you'd need to check these only if you had artifacts and graphics problems.

as for your card getting 5700 on 3dmark03... thats ok for stock speeds...meaning there is no problem with your card and the reason for your low FPS in games would be system related..
what you need to do is run Aquamark03 on your system as this test puts a strain on your system and not just the card.
post back the CPU/Graphics/TOTAL scores that you got and then we could tell you for sure what your problems are...

I've tried lots of drivers, but right now - 4.12 ATi officials with radlinker, and the latest VIA hyperions. They seem to get me the best performance. Peace,

these are my scores:
AquaMark Score: 53048 AquaMark CPU Score: 9677 AquaMark GFX Score: 7307

as you can see - GFX card scores are not so far a part. seeing as my card is well overclocked then yours...
but the CPU scores on your system are very low - meaning that most of the problem that your having comes from the system and not the GFX card.

you should try fixing up the timings to your memeory and try to optimize your BIOS settings all over....

Thanks for the heads up - is there a guide to bios settings etc? Also, what should I set my memory timings to (i think in the bios I saw CAS etc.). I dont know if I want to do a complete overhaul of my system's bios settings since I'm getting an AMD64 3000+ next week, but every little bit of extra performance would be nice till then Thanks,

I found a bios guide and I didnt get any improvement, save my ram acting a little faster (so atleast it wasnt a total waste I guess). It actually makes sense that my CPU is holding me down, since I noticed in the VST that when I enabled AA and AF there was like a 1/2 fps difference. Hmmm... Thanks again!

System Specs

just out of shear morbid curiousity, what VIA chipset is it? my kt400 Asus A7V8X-X was stuck w/ about those same scores, both with my 9800pro and x800xt.

Biostar KM266. Also I guess the fact that I only have 4x AGP is lowering my gfx score a bit. Peace,

rojakpot has a REALLY good bios guide

http://www.rojakpot.com/

look on the far left in the menu thingy. theres a bios opt guide. check it out. It is VERY GOOD!

or you can buy their book at most book stores. It is much more user friendly and only about $10.

or maybe it was F-ed up motherboard stuff and now that you swapped mobos its better.

either way you have a nice rig now.
