irregular drop shadows, Intoxicated behavior

I'm desperate for any ideas!!!!

while launching a program, or opening an explorer window, it will cause most of my desktop items to cast very dark shadows. opening a window over them will restore them. I've hunted all over -- and the only clue I have is that the only the shortcut items on the desktop do not react the same way.

screenshot

sometimes it appears like my desktop quickly (about 1 sec) wobbles back into existence after I close a window.

using window blinds, sapphire 9000se, xpsp2

uninstall, and reinstall of wb or latest video drivers and nforce chipset drivers do not correct the problem

a little more info

I can cause the dark shadows on desktop icons every time I launch FlashMX - it seems to be the only program using %98 of CPU at startup - other programs are less than %60.

Havent yet noticed CPU consumption when the shadows happen to occur as a result of opening an explorer window - but usually I've been running for a while.

Is this a memory problem? computer or video card?

System Specs

First off, the "wobbling" you speak of: I take it you have a CRT monitor.

The reason it wobbles is that you have a bright white window open. This makes the display alter the projection pattern, and your viewable screen size becomes slightly smaller horizontally (and possibly vertically). When you close a window with a lot of white, your display will revert to a larger projection pattern, and while it's adjusting, you will notice a bit of wobbling.

I'm not sure about the drop shadows, but if it's not a fatal issue, I wouldn't worry about it.

Someone else may have a solution for you.
