9600 mobility issue
Hi,
I have a Multivision laptop fitted with a Radeon 9600 Mobility. For one reason or another, I had to reformat it's hard drive, and just re-installed Windows. Multivision went bust a week after I bought the laptop(!) so they obviously don't provide drivers anymore. The Omega driver works fine but only with the power supply plugged into it. When I run it just from the battery, the screen is garbled. Does anyone know what I can do to cure this? Gray |

strange.
Have you tried using the official catalyst with the mobility modder? |

I tried it, until I got a message saying it couldn't continue for some reason.
Sorry, but what is the "mobility modder"? |

Patje's DH Mobility Modder
It allows you to modify normal Catalyst drivers (even optimzied ones) so that you can install them onto laptop/mobility ATI cards. Run the installer for the ATI drivers, cancel them when the ATI logo pops up, then run the mobility modder. Then its just a matter of picking your card from the list. When the modder is done it will ask about installing the drivers. That's about it really. - Tip |

Hi,
I just tried the modder (handy app, thanks) and exactly the same thing happens. The graphics are fine, until I disconnect the power supply. Gray |

Give the modder a try with the official ATI Catalyst 5.3s.
One thing you might want to look into is what the laptop does to the video when it's running off the battery. In the bios is there a setting that tells the laptop to reduce power to the display when on battery? Also, do you have access to power options within Windows that allows for things like clock rate, or adjusting power consumption to specific parts of the system? I remember the PowerPlay tab had options like that, but it's been an issue of late in trying to get that tab up and running with current ATI drivers these days, so unfortunatly I can't suggest how to get it to work. - Tip |

I checked the BIOs and there are no power reducing settings, which is something I wondered at the start if it could be.
I have played around with the settings in the control panel and it's working! No idea what I did, I tried loads of things, maybe when I have more time I will change each setting one by one to find the culprit. Thanks for all your help, Gray |

Have you tried a few more driver releases from a while back, to see if they fix anything? Can you take a screenshot to show what exactly the "garbage" is?

I had the same problem with my ATI Radeon 9600 mobile. When I unplugged the AC adaptor the screen broke up into a million lines that werent sync'd together. I fixed the problem by updating to the latest ATI Omega Drivers and tweaking the settings.
1. Go to Display Properties 2. Click on the Settings tab 3. Click on the Advanced Icon 4. Click on the POWERPLAY tab 5. The "Enable POWERPLAY(tm)" should already be selected - If not select it and click apply 6. Click the POWERPLAY settings Icon 7. Set all of the performance bars to "Optimal Performance" by moving the tab all the way to the right hand side. 8. Deselect the box that sais "Allow automatic color depth reduction" 9. Click ok 10. Now Deselect the "Enable POWERPLAY" 11. Click Apply and Ok I hope this helps you out!
