9800se ?
Hi all, new here and to OC'ng in general and have some questions - just got a powercolor 9800se (256bit) and was able to softmod it no problem using omega 2.6.12 - then feeling brave installed a arctic vga silencer (also vram heatsinks) and overclocked with riva tuner, seems to be stable @ 440 core and 365 mem - 3dmark03 score of 6227 - my question is all I did was adjust the clock speeds, there seems to be a lot of other settings that could be tweaked if you knew what you were doing (whithin rivatuner)- would it be worth educating myself enough to use these settings, or am I pretty much at the limits now? and is there a difference with which prog you use? (riva tuner/radlinker/atitools) thanks in advance
p4 @2.8ghz 1.5 gigs pc3200 I guess one of my questions would be should i look into flashing the bios? is it worth the risk? Anybody? .......did I say somthing wrong? no advice from anyone? Last edited by bcs89; Apr 8, 2005 at 08:44 PM. |

So, is there a secret handshake i missed - or is my ? just too stupid to get a response? was really looking for some advice here, you all seem to be very "up" on the v-card info. If I said something wrong let me know and i will re-word the ?.

I'm pretty sure thats all you need, the pipes were probably unlocked already and your clock speed is fine. I'm not sure about flashing the bios but unless you have a PCI card and if your computer is working fine, then I wouldn't recommend it.

It's easier to just use the omega drivers and let him worry about the tweaks

http://forums.rojakpot.com/showthread.php?t=9360 - some info there
The article actually refers to the softmod, but the thread also takes in the hard-mod (BIOS). Disadvanatages of the hard-mod ... potential for screwup. Advantage, no need to rely on softmod drivers, if the card is 100%. On further reading, it appears there is MORE than just a BIOS swap involved in a successful HARDMOD, otherwise you have a card that says 9800Pro, clocks at 9800Pro speed, but still has only 4 of 8 pipelines unless you also use a softmod. Sounds like it's more trouble than it's worth, unless the softmod ends up blocked! |

Here's the 411 since your card seems to handle the 9800XT speeds very well...
Read this thread and flash your BIOS for an XT one. This will make Windows recognize your card as a real 9800XT. Better timings and XT speeds already in the BIOS. The only drawback is that you'll need to use the Omega Drviers to unlock the other 4 pipes becasue the BIOS flash will not do that. Omega Drivers are very good, so you can't wrong on that. There's an utility called RadLinker in the Omega Drivers that will allow you to futher overclock your card some more if you want to. ![]() I know this process works because I was one of the guys that tried this mod and it worked for me perfectly. Since that I changed to an x800 card, but that's another story. Go for it!!! |
