Bad crashing problem..

I didnt find a good area to post this in, so ill post it here.

For a long time (started when i upgraded my Omegas :S) my computer has been crashing randomly in games. It goes like this: Screen goes blank and i hear popping from the headphones. Recently it also has started to make normal freezes; screen freezes and sound loops. My hardware:

A64 3200+
GB GA-K8NS Pro
1gig Kingston vram
X800 XT PE (put into the computer after the problem started, didnt help)
Nexus 400W (put into the computer after the problem started, didnt help)
Audigy2
W2KP SP4

i had the same problem. then i gave the DNA drivers a try and i haven't had that problem since. I didn't have that problem with the omega's until 5.1 i think, and these DNA's work just as well if not better in my opinion.

crashed with DNAs..

the crashing happens only when in 3d games, so i think it must be a gfx card issue :/ maybe the mobo's agp is broken or something..

Are you running with 2 sticks of 512MB kingston valueram at 200MHz FSB? If you are try taking one of them out or drop your FSB to 166. I have a gigabyte K8VT800pro MB and was running with 2 512MB DDR400 modules of Kingston valueram, everytime I installed a new driver set for my X800pro the screen got corrupt at startup and the computer reset itself, the solution was to disable fastwrites. Replaced the 2x512 with 1x1GB DDR400 and everything seems rock solid now.

Couple things to try:

Obvious things: Try enabling FastWrites. By default most of the modded drivers turn them off, but sometimes certain cards with certain motherboard combinations run more stable with FastWrites ON.

Try uninstalling SmartGART altogether using ATIs SmartGART Uninstaller. Again, most modded drivers don't install this service, so it may or may not make a difference.

Try rearranging the power cables connected to the card. See if you can get it to be either by itself on a power rail (cable), or at least be the first connector closest to the PSU on the rail, and not with critical devices such as hard drives & optical drives.

I can't think of anything else at the moment. Give those a shot, and let us know what happens.

Nice one, I think the problem comes from the onboard memory controller on the 754 Athlon64s. When you use two doublesided memory modules they offically only support DDR333, some other motherboard manufacturers have improved support for DDR400 in this configuration but Gigabyte seem to have problems.

I've run into similar problems for a while and I jsut shelled out about 400$ for a new motherboard and RAM, but you probably don't want to walk down the same path.

First, run Memtest86 during the night and see what errors (if any) come up. If anything comes up then you know it's a RAM, controller or timing issue.

If nothing comes up, run 3DMark2005's video tests. If it locks up, it may be related to Video Card overheat. If it runs through it several times without any problems, run 3DMark's CPU tests and see if those lock up your PC.

Basically, you're trying to figure out what exactly is causing the problem. Also be sure to defrag, chkdsk and run virus scanners.
