well, it depends on what part f the 9600 series it is (i know a lot of 9600 cards don't report their exact model)

the 9600se is very much a budget card, the 9600 is old, the 9600 pro and 9600XT are decent for a very cheap gaming card.

a 9800pro would be a better choice, it's less than 150 bucks on newegg now.

from 9600 Pro on (and better) it is a good gaming card playing in up to 1024x768x32 display resolution absolutely smooth provided u have at least 1 gig ram and a FSB 333 CPU in your box.

i noticed quite a difference when going to a gig a couple of months ago with the games i played, in particular the latest medal of honour was almost unplayable at any decent settings and now i can max it out pretty much (@ a reasonable resolution). in general fps wont increase, but youll stop the games accessing the hard drive whilst youre playing (those long pauses of half a second every so often)

EDIT: sorry to the thread starter for posting a bit off-topic. if the 9600 is a pro then its similar to my card and I can play every game out there reasonably well, not all details on full at top resolutions in farcry perhaps, but taking farcry as an example, with no antialiasing or filtering I can have everying else @ max and run at 1280x1024 fairly comfortably so your friend has a pretty decent card, as long as he doesnt expect to get $500 worth of performance

1G or RAM sure helps, as mentioned. Especially with games that use large levels and a lot of textures, since then most of them are swapped into RAM (unless you have a 512MB card )

stuttering could be fixed by switching your fastwrites setting. if it's off turn it on, if it's on, turn it off.

it could also be processor related.

if the HD is frequently accessing (causing the stutter) the pagefile while u play it definitely will help.

I just bought a Sapphire 9600 Pro 128 for $85 at the local store. I think it will suit my backup needs well.
