X800 Flashing *Question*

Hi everyone!

I've been reading through all the X800 flashing forum posts online, and as i've recently brought an X800 myself, I would like to flash it, to make it as good as the 6800GT it's replacing.

I'm sure this questions been asked a million times, but i'll ask it again, as I can't seem to find an answer anywhere.

Basically, i'm wondering if the card has to be ViVo in order to flash it, as I have bought a non ViVo card inadvertantly.

Is there any kind of flashing I can do to it, i.e. open the remaining pipelines, or even upgrade it to an XT PE?

Thanks a lot

Dan

make sure its a vivo and not a non vivo. the Vivos are the one that flashes. the non viivos doesnt. and also if ita a sappire X800pro vivo then it not gonna flash.

Yeah if you got a basic pro, you're screwed on unlocking pipes because you have to do a hard mod and soft mod, and the new cards are fixed from that mod anyway. Your best chance of increasing performance is to do a pencil volt mod and overclock it since they overclock good. On stock voltage, my overclock beats tons of 6800 gt/u performance.

But 16 pipelines helps more than OC'ed 12 pipelines

But 16 pipes is going to be much harder to pull off than a nice overclock. There's also the good chance of faulty pipes. A lot of pros aren't xts because they couldn't do 16 pipes.

So this applies to vanilla x800 cards too?

I'm looking at the Xpertvision x800, which has 256mb of DDR 3, stock clocked at 392eng/450mem (900 effective). It has 12 pipes enabled.

Can this be softmodded or would it require some kind of hardware mod too? If it can't be softmodded I will just OC it.

You'd have to flash the BIOS, and if it didn't work, you'd be S.O.L

i haven seen a case where it doesnt work, unless u tried to flash a sappire x800 pro vivo. or u didnt follow the readme, you can do a blind flash or if u have a PCI video card , u could undo the flash. and try again.

i dont remember which bios u use to do it though i used to know.

I almost went X800XL(Sapphire) but I ended up picking up a Powercolor X800XT(it was a Refurb and the same price)Now having said that mine doesnt like running at PE. I have been told that the later batches just arent as robust. I play flight sims with this rig(Pacific Fighters) so I am taxing it pretty hard and it starts artifacting as a PE(flashed) after about 20minutes of play and temp wise it may be hitting Mid 60s.Now I have ordered a Silencer 4 so I will retest it again as a PE and see if it was merely a heat issue, but I wouldnt be the first XT owner that couldnt handle PE speeds so be warned

i bought a sapphire x800pro vivo and flashed it to a xt pe with no probs at all, got all the pipes as well only issue was heat so installed a artic silencer 4 and no probs now idle temps are around 35-39 depending on room temp and max temp never goes higher than 71 and no artifacts at all!

Yeah but the problem is if you're not lucky you're S.O.L. on a 400+ dollar card

Indeed! Im mean Im happy its an XT and functions well as an XT but I do get kinda jealous when a guy like massyuk gets a PRO and makes it a PE without issue. My Silencer should be here in a few days so I hope it will be more successful. By massy's idle temps it looks possible as mine idles at around 41c now(with AS5 on the stock cooler) IF its a heat issue PLZ let it be!

What can't it handle, gpu or mem speed? I'm sure the gpu can go higher than 20mhz OC. If the memory can't handle high speeds, you will see a lot of artifacting, 60mhz OC may be pushing it. gpu is much more important in terms of performance anyway so try getting gpu up and then see what you can do with memory.

Yeah I had tryed reflashing it to PE with custom clocks of 520/520 tho it performed better it still eventually began to Artifact, As I said my Silencer 4 should arrive in the next 48hrs or so I will retest then and hope it was a heat issue. it has Samsung 1.6ns RAM so there plenty of overhead even at 560 I just hope the first purchaser(bought it Refurb) hadnt pushed it so far to have damaged them

i think i'm sol with a voltmod on my x800pro modded to PE... it keeps artifacting randomly, even in 2d mode. not a driver issue....

if i use a vacuum cleaner to suck up all the graphite on the resistor that should be enough to undo the voltmod right? ...

Use rubbing alcohol for that...I wouldnt trust a vaccuum that close to my GPU

Since when? It used to be. But now the memory bandwidth is more the bottleneck.

At higher resolutions (Which you would be modding to be able to play at anyway), having AA and AF enabled eats memory bandwidth like hell so better to have more of that than fill rate

It could possibly generate static and damage it, but anyway would you use a vaccum cleaner to remove a pencil mark from a piece of paper?

WEll first of all the suction, if powerful enough, can rip stuff off. Second blunt instruments near thousand dollar marvels of engineering technology should be enough to make you nervous...unless you've got alot of cash or extra cards lying around :O

hhahah no i'm a tool like that.

uh well with the pencil mod on the resistor its just graphite dust not really the same as drawing something on because its the dust inbetween the legs of the resistor that makes the mod work.

i'm gonna redo the mod and see if that fixes it.
