Artifacts, Radeon x800 PRO.

I'm getting the most wonderful thing: Artifacts. Battlefield 2 demo comes out, and guess what? Unplayable. Why? Artifacts. There was a time where my system was almost perfect. Here is a screenshot of BF2:

This is not my first time posting about problems with this X800. I'm about to toss it out and get a Nvidia.

Now what can I do about these artifacts? My system is 100% up-to-date. My video card is in NO way OVERCLOCKED AT ALL. This happens on Battlefield 2, and Half Life 2 (and mods) only. I just installed ATI's latest drivers.

Please help

Note this does not happen at all in America's Army, Brothers in Arms, and Battlefield 1942 and Vietnam (very rare). What is wrong with this? It's a Sapphire Radeon x800 PRO.

Those aren't artifacts, but missing textures.

I would double check the settings within the drivers. First thing, try using the Catasyst Control Panel version, or the one without the CCC. Make sure that you aren't using Anti-Aliasing, or Anisotropic Filtering, as well as turning off Fast Writes. You mentioned that you are using the latest ATI drivers. Did you do a complete uninstall, and cleaning using Driver Cleaner before hand? I would certainly give that a shot.

Of note, I'm sure that ATI or DICE will fix this issue pretty quickly. At the moment I wish I could play this demo to better help you out, but at the moment my card is being RMA'd.

Question: Does this type of missing textures happen in every resolution?

I just downloaded BF2 Demo tonight, and it's playing flawlessly on my couple of day old Ati X800XT AIW! I have the latest (5.5)catalyst, & (9.08) MMC. But I have to set the card to all default settings. Maybe that will make it work.

No. If I minimize the game, change resolutions, etc. all the artifacts or whatever it is will disappear. That's what made me think it was artifacts, I'm sure it is. This does the same thing in Half Life 2.

That actually points towards texture problems as Tipstaff mentioned. IF you change resolutions, and other things, textures are re-initialized.

Do they disappear or appear when you change resolutions, etc?

Yes, it does.

But it does this in Half Life 2, also. Two games downloaded that have bad textures?

I disabled my FastWrites, and now I'm getting major performance issues. I was flying a jet in BF2 and it lagged like nuts. I'm getting 40 ping.

My GPU is only 43C, which I believe is good. My CPU is only 102F, while playing BF2. Could it be my processor simply can't keep up with my video card? If that's the case, then I'll upgrade my video card and motherboard to AMD FX.

Could this be a harddrive issue?

Missing textures wouldn't indicate a slow CPU...just a poorly written game or a driver not aware of the game.
Might try disabling Catalyst AI, it might be trying generic D3D improvements or optimizations that don't jibe with BF2

Have you tried just for kicks to reinstall the drivers following all the driver cleaning procedures? Sometimes d3d files can be misonfigured, currupted, or heck knows what else. Also as suggested above, try CPanel vs CCC driver packages, and also try playing with Catalyst AI settings.

I've been having the exact same problems as Thomas. Here is my setup with nothing overclocked:

A64 3400+
1GB OCZ EL PC3200
ATi X800 Pro

I used to play UT2K4 without any problems whatsoever. Then HL2 came along and I started noticing texture problems or what I believed to be artifacts. Not so much in HL2 but moreso in CS:S. My temperatures are fine and my case is well ventilated (5 fans). Like Thomas stated, if I start having texture problems in CS:S I will go into the video options and change a setting in order to reinitialize the textures. Then everything is fine, sometimes for 5 minutes or other times I won't have many problems at all. I have Catalyst 5.6's installed and everything else has been thoroughly cleaned out. I am using the CP rather than the CCC but I have tried both and I had the same problem. AA/AF usage doesn't change a thing, either. I have no idea what's going on here but I haven't been too happy!

Hi Everyone.

I have the SAME exact problem with BF2 and Half-Life2 ONLY. This is not a heat issue (My card is running at 55-60Celcius) with a Arctic Silencer 5.

System Specs:

Athlon64 3200+,
2x512MB Mushkin PC 3200,
2x100GB Western Digital,
Sapphire X800XT Platinum Edition Running on Cat's 5.6,
Windows XP SP2

Nothing is overclocked...

NOTE: I tested and re-tested my computer & game settings and I only have this problem with FSAA Enable on both games... And I don't have this problem with Catalyst 5.1. However BF2 Is crashing with these driver. So It has to be a Driver bug. Damn I'm so happy you guys also have this problem. I thought it was my card...

Tylenol, I also went back and tried out the 5.1's and it got rid of the texture problems in both games but I was getting the blue screen of death in BF2. These problems still occur in BF2 and HL2 regardless if my AA is on or off.

Wait wait wait...

For those who have the problem, do you have a Sapphire card. I do and my buddy does. And we both have this problem.

Mine will sometimes work fine like that as well, specifically CS:S. Some nights I can play for hours and nothing. Then I'll quit the game, rejoin, or restart my computer another night and right from the start the textures are messed. I worked on the problem with a tech support guy for Steam for about 2 months earlier this year and everything he suggested failed to work. I haven't got a response from him since then...

I have the same problem as ThomasMack on my other computer. My system is a Pentium 4 2.8 with a Built by ATI 9800 PRO 128mb card AGP. This happened to me a very long time ago and still is a problem today What I did to fix the problem was just to turn down my AGP to 4x and not 8x. I have tried many different driver sets ATI and Omega and nothing changes. I also have nothing over clocked and like the others say its not a heat issue and it's not a power issiue due to the fact that I just got a new ps and still does it only in AGP 8X. It looks like thomas's photo in every game that I play. BF 1942, Vietnam etc. Most of the time I will see that stuff on the screen and then my screen will just turn off or restart my computer. I have posted this a very long time ago and everyone was saying it was a heat problem but now that other people are getting this issiue I know it's not only me. If anyone could please figure out what the problem is that would be a great help to everyone who has this problem!

For starters I know it's:

Not my motherboard as I used a different one with the same problems
Not a heat problem
Not a power problem
Not a XP problem I did many fresh install's with XP and still the same problem
Don't think it's a Direct X problem becasue it happens on 8,9b, and 9C

So I am thinking its a problem with the card it self.

Sad, Before I bought my X800XTPE I've had a Asus 9800XT on the same computer... I've never had this kind of problem with it. Everything was great. Then I bought my X800XTPE back in June 2004. The problems started with Counter-Strike: Source around February/Mars. I'm sure this is a Driver bug... The strange thing is I only have this problem with CS:Source, Battlefield2 and not in other games at all... Yesteday I installed Cat's 5.1 to test them with BF2 and everything was great. However I get BSOD after 20-25mins of playing. And I think the Cat's5.1 came out in January/Feb...

Let's suppose this is not a Card and Driver issue... What could it be? I'm thinking of a VIA Driver issue. Probably, I remember I've installed a new set of VIA Hyperion not a long time ago. Anyway It could be anything. But I'm sure this isn't a heat issue.

Yeah it could be related to a VIA driver .. i wouldnt be surprised at all because VIA always release bad drivers for their mobo .... remember me the ol day with my athlon 1.2gig ...

Yeah mine used to be fine as well until sometime earlier this year. It definitely has to be some sort of driver issue. I updated to the newest VIA drivers and still have the texture problems. Hopefully we can figure this out soon (before the retail BF2 comes out!). One interesting thing is if I go to Start->Run and type in "dxdiag" and go to the "Display" tab and click the "Test Direct3D" tab where it shows a rotating cube with the DirectX logo on it I'll sometimes see the DirectX logo all messed up just like the in game textures. Other times (like right now) I'll run it and it'll be clear. Here is a picture of it displaying clear, are the edges of the "X" supposed to be jagged like that or smooth? I'm off to bed right now but the next time I run it and it's messed up I'll post another pic. I'm not sure if this has any relation to the problems we're getting during gameplay but it's something that I thought was worth noting.

I just ran the test and the DirectX Logo was messed up in all DiretcX version...

I've created a similar topic in the "Windows Radeon Display Drivers" section and the DHzer0point Author replyed this:

Ok, I've seen that before, have you in the past run any modded drivers or used ATItray tool? If so, have you run DC Pro? If not or unsure uninstall drivers completely, run DC Pro in safe mode and install drivers of choice, if the uninstalling thing doesn't work try turing texture detail down and see if it still happens, one of our beta testers had the same issue and NOTHING fixed it, except the Catalyst 4.12's except turning texture detail down, until he bought a new mobo, seemed to be a goofy memory controller/FSB issue with his via mobo.

Now we should ask to everyone who has this problem if they own a VIA Motherboard. I do, (Asus K8V Deluxe). I'll try to mess with my BIOS settings once again... As for now the only way I could get rid of this Texture Corruption is by setting my AGP Mode at 4x...

Yes this is definitely a VIA AGP Driver problem... The only way to temporary fix it is by setting your AGP Mode at 4x in the BIOS. I've tried all the VIA Hyperion drivers. We should e-mail VIA about this problem since we're not the only one with this bug. I highly doubt they'll help us out... However we have nothing to loose.

The next mobo I'll buy won't be a VIA Chipset that's for sure If you find a new "better" fix for it please let me know. Tyl3n0L@hotmail.com

Happy Gaming!!!
