Big Grin ATI Radeon X1800 "R520"

Our friends at HKEPC has gotten themselves a R520 card and it will probably be officially known as Radeon X1800 when launch in early October. Interestingly, there are 16, 24 and 32 pipes versions but there are only 10 pieces of the 32 pipes versions exist currently. The core clock of the card is 650Mhz+ and memory at 1400Mhz. The R520 card uses 1.26ns GDDR3 memories. The 32 pipes R520 performance will exceed the GeForce 7800GTX.

I nearly bought a G70 moments before this came out! With news like this, I can wait...maybe.

Why not Y800?

Wow, apparently, they DID make a 32 pipe version. Must be saving it up.

It's the Roman numerals thingy that I wish they'd lose ie 9800>X800>X1800 though surely it'd be more like XI800. God bless the next generation lol....the X11800.

More New R520 Info....

Here's some more info regarding the R520. Of course this should be regarded as a rumor until it can be confirmed. That said, I believe it's true!

The specs on the new cards save for the pipelines which should come in 3 flavors 16pp, 24pp and 32pp.

Right now the product lineup is:
R520 XT
  • 512MB RAM
  • ~600 MHz core
  • ~650-700 MHz memory
  • Dual slot cooling
  • Dual DVI
R520 XL
  • 256MB RAM
  • ~500 MHz core
  • ~500 MHz memory
  • Single slot cooling
  • VGA + DVI
R520 LE
  • 256MB RAM
  • ~450 MHz core
  • ~450 MHz memory
  • Single slot cooling
  • VGA + DVI
R520 XT Crossfire Edition
  • 256MB RAM
  • ~600 MHz core
  • ~650-700 MHz memory
  • Dual slot cooling
  • VGA + DVI
I guess we can expect a Pro version in between there soon.

In the thread at HKEPC linked above (translated) "it is likely that the ATI R520 will change its name to ATI Radeon X1800 series, the estimated release date for the ATI X900 series is early October".
One of these two names is correct my source says, he didn't want to reveal which one though. The October release date is correct.

Geez, I should hope so. I believe even the 16 pipe card will; although only slightly and it won't be a total victory. I think the 24 pipe card will though. I can't wait to see some official numbers and previews!

There's not much out there in terms of prices even in the latest rumors. I myself would guess that the prices would go something like this.

R520 XT 32 pipes 600MHz core/650-700MHz memory (512MB) $600 - $700
R520 XT CE 32 pipes 600MHz core/650-700MHz memory(256MB) $550 - $650 -higher price because of Master card
R520 XL 24 pipes 500MHz core/500MHz memory(256MB) $400 - $500
R520 LE 16 pipes 450MHz core/450MHz memory(256MB) $300 - $400

Those are just guesses of course but I honestly think I went a bit high. I say that because ATi cards are usually slightly cheaper than nV cards are and the prices will probably be closer to the first price stated above.

There are other rumors stating that the fastest R520 XT has only 16 pipes. I have no idea whether it's true or not...maybe so, but if that's true then I would think it has a superior architecture...much like the Athlon 64 has. In this case though, they make more efficient use of fewer pipelines. Personally, I'd feel more secure knowing there are 24 and 32 pp cards! I believe the most popular high end cards will be the R520 XL 24 pipe card and R520 LE 16 pipe. Aside from the higher price of the R520 XT, the availability will suck....again this is by way of rumor but I totally believe this one since it makes perfect sense. I'd love to get my hands on a R520 XT but I don't know if that's possible. It will be hard enough getting the R520 or Radeon X1800 XL, but I believe that if the XL has 24 pipes it will easily own the G70! I'm thinking on the lines of the 9800 Pro beating the 5800 Ultra!
