Metal Gear Solid 2 w AIW 9800 Pro

I am in desperate need of some help....

I have graphics glitches in Metal Gear Solid 2 Substance, even though my PC is well suited for it. The game originally supported only Nvidia cards, but then they made an ATI patch to run it on ATI cards. Now while it helps ensure some of those exclusive bugs wont come, it doesn't help much. Konami has never since made a new patch or offered any FAQ or help for the game. I've tried emailing them and using their message board countless times - the fans have offered more help than they have amazingly.

I upgraded from a GeForce 4 MX 440 to an ATI AIW 9800 Pro, cause I needed power but not top of the line, I wanted to do video capture stuff, AND I heard some success stories from ATI users of the game, yet they've never been able to help me figure out my problem.... After 2 1/2 years, upgrading, and since its one of my fave ever games, I'd REALLY do anything to get this working, but I'm no PC whiz...

So here is my PC:

ATI All in Wonder 9800 Pro w Catalyst 5.9 driver
Pent 4 1.6 Ghz
512 mb DDR ram
DX 9c
ATI Substance patch

My settings:

Model quality on 2/4 notches. Note that you don't get all graphic effects with it turned down, but I HAVE to if I want to see the game at all.

Here are the problems:

Model quality slider 3 or 4 = no textures at all. a very black game.

Model quality 2:

-no ocean texture in the plant chapter - all white
-video sequences on the monitors are missing
-stealth camofluage is busted (100% invisible)
-some shadows are missing including really big problems in the dark hallways of the tanker where the FLASHLIGHT DOESN'T WORK, it doesn't light up anything or produce shadows of the enemies.
-VR guards are missing some textures so they have a really plain look that matches the colour of their surroundings too much

Other than its pretty funny to see a flying wig attack enemies, these bugs suck and I'd really like to fix this problem to enjoy the game as its meant to be, after 2 1/2 years and taking ages to pick this graphics card.

Other things to note:

I've tried newest drivers over and over and over again, even as someone else with an ATI card said newer drivers worked for him but it didn't for me. I don't think drivers are my issue. I would like to know if there is SOMETHING ELSE IMPORTANT that determines if you'll have problems or not that I don't even realise? I'm begging if anyone has any suggestions or knows exactly what to do, PLEASE HELP!

I have also tried the Omega drivers today as well, but no change. And I have no idea what tweaks or something would help me, but I don't want to ruin anything.....

Does anyone else have the game and know? Or can you suggest some things I can try? I really have no idea.... And since it sold very poorly on the PC, there is never any demand at ATI or Nvidia to adjust their drivers to work with the game. But anyway, I asked ATI many times for help too, and never found a solution. If its even something as some other drivers or software missing or screwed up, I have no idea what to do about it.

i have MGS2 also dude, running on a 9700 pro let me see what I can get fixed for you

no one here will reply to the MGS2 problems. everyone avoided the game since it was so buggy. but me being the metal gear freak i am purchased it

try also screwing around with ur catalyst settings if u havent already. the only problems i have is crappy character shadows and messed up hair textures at times. turn off focus also if u haven't tried it

Well now I have had some luck by 'overriding vertex shaders' in the tweak section of ATI tray tools with the Omega drivers. It fixed the lighting, stealth, and ocean textures in the game!!

However I still get weird VR guards and no shine effect on characters.

This part of the Konami board has a fix! 2 people had success!

Look for Tomasz posts at the bottom.

The only problem is I really don't know how to edit hexs... I wouldn't know where to begin!
But if I can get some help with this, it will be great, cause the game will work, AND I can send copies of the exe file to MGS fansites to offer for download.

well thats a start, the game has 5.1 sound issues. ive found that installing the audigy 2 zs drivers or audigy 4 drivers it works perfect. or u can force it to run in its own creditials to force 5.1 sound

guys just be careful this game is buggy as hell. even more on ati cards. also you cannot play it without a controller its impossible with 2 analog sticks. the kb and mouse is terribly done. being the biggest MGS fan on this site, if u might be ready for a letdown of a port here is one. you might get lucky like me and try 1 month and get everything work nearly perfect

that would be a good idea if your ATI card cant do it. use the better card and do the workarounds if you can. running with different creditials helps the sound problem i know that much. but it can cause problems saving games. if you lower the sound acceleration to basic or emulation you will get the sound working properly.
