X800 pro Problems !HELP

I am having some trouble with my graphics card and it is quite frustrating. It is a wonderful card, when it works, but since I bought it I have been having problems with my computer. Whenever I play graphically intensive games (doom, halflife, etc...) They freeze up after a while. I either get the VPU recover message "failed to lock index buffer in CmeshDX8::LockIndexBuffer"(in halflife) or a 0.5 second sound loop and a grossly mangled frozen screen that looks like a zoomed in MS paint scribble (doom). I am assuming it is the graphics card, but it is hard to tell as my system is all new. I have a 500 watt antec PS, 1 GB kingston DDR400 Ram, an Athlon 64 3000+ processor and an Asus A8V-E delux motherboard. PC probe tells me that my voltage is fine, my processor never exedes 44 degrees C, and my motherboard about 40 degrees C.

Which catalyst-version are you using with your x800 ? Which VIA chipset driver-version you have installed ? Service Pack 2 installed ?

I'd suggest first try updating Catalyst and chipset -drivers, do a manual system restore point though before updating, incase you get more uncommon instability. You should be able to revert to older drivers also from the driver properties.

Using onboard soundcard ? Which drivers ? Maybe could think about updating those too.

Could try disabling the vpu-recovery from the catalyst panel.

Maybe run memtest86 , just to be sure, theres nothing wrong with you RAM.

Overclocked your X800 ? If not, try to underclock your card just a bit with ie. Atitool just to see, if it has any effect.

I presume from your post, that your card is rather new, just curious, you had a ATI or Nvidia card before ? a clean reinstall of XP could also do the trick.

Could also be a defective card.

Currently using:

service pack 2 - with all the updates
Via hyperion pro 5.04A
Catalyst 05.10

I should have mentioned that I recently refreshed my entire system with a fresh windows installation and a clean hard drive. I have the latest drivers for everything (I think) including my soundcard, which happens to be an Audiophile 2496. My X800 pro has never been overclocked and I have tried underclocking it with Radlinker. It seemed to prolong freezing a little, but was hardly worth the drop in performance. I haven't tested my RAM however, so I'll get on that. Right now I'm hoping it isn't defective, as I bought it OEM and only have a manufacturers warranty.

I have the same card and I was having problems with the 5.10s!
I installed the new 5.11s from ATI and they are doing the job as of now.I would try those before you panic on the card being bad.
One more thing is, it could be running hot! try checking the card temp with ATI Tools and try to stay away from ATI Tray Tool, I believe there may be a bug or two in it. If your card is running hot just pickup an after market cooler and you will be fine. I use water cooling on my card because the X800 pros run hot.

I hope this helps!

I updated to catalyst 5.11 and it seems to have fixed most of the problems, except now my computer thinks that I am using the lesser X800 GTO as opposed to my X800 pro. Strange.

In "display properties - settings - advanced - adapter" It states under adapter information - Chip type: RADEON X800 GTO (0x5549)

It never mentioned a GTO here before.

Actually, this whole window is scewwed - up: I no longer have the ATI specific tabs available - just the standard windows ones. Perhaps the drivers did not install properly.

Yes, I would try installing the drivers again after completly uninstalling and running driver cleaner in safemode!

And are you installing CCC or the none CCC?

I reinsalled the drivers after using the catalyst uninstaller. The tabs are back, but the GTO's still here. I am using the non CCC drivers, as I find the control center to increase my startup time by about 25 seconds.
