9600 pro with 4AGP MB, worth it?

AMD athlon XP 2400+ 1900GHz

512 MB Ram

Window XP Home 2002 Service pack 1

I usually upgrade some internal parts every few years and I was thinking about updating my video card from Mx440 64 MB to Ge cube radeon 9600 pro 128, 256 or xt. I only have one 4xAGP slot on my K7S5A motherboard and I don’t plan to upgrade my motherboard until the next upgrade. Is it worth paying for a 8xAGP card now given I wont be using it to its full potential or will I still experience greater performance only using it in 4xAGP form. Currently playing older games like unreal tournament 2003 though I noticed playing newer titles like gt legends I experience stalls when the game keeps playing but the picture freezes which is why I was thinking about upgrading.

Any responses would be appreciated.

I guess it depends how much the new card is/how long you will use it for. For instance when you upgrade your mobo will you buy agp or pci e? Perhaps your better off buying the mobo and card at the same time, making that purchase the one you stick with for the next 12-18 months.
In the short term im guessing dropping to agp x4 wont be that much of a differance, but is is worth it?

If you can get the card relatively cheap and it will make this system last a bit longer I say why not. Certainly kicks the crap out of a GeForce MX

I think you should upgrade to 8xAGP if you want to upgrade in the future to a x800 or something like that.
For the moment i think that the radeon 9600 pro or xt is a very good upgrade against the mx440.

Intel pentium 4 1.6Ghz.
Motherboard:Intel 845EPI 4xAGP.
Ati Radeon 9200 SE OC (275/440(220x2).

Generic PSU

512 mb 333

definately worth it, i threw out my mx440 (capacitor burned)a few weeks ago and replaced it with ati 9550 256Mb, i' also have a 4x mobo. 512ram, P4 2G. the 4x is not the point so now i can play almost all of the new games on medium details. 800 x 600 of course. warcraft 3 can go full detail on 1024x768 (hurray on tat )
