Sapphire X850 XTPE Overheating
First off, let me say I'm not a real big game player, but I do have certain games that I like to play. Usually, when I play my games I have the game settings at their highest settings and have never had a problem. I recently picked up a copy of Silent Hunter III (I'm a big naval sim fan). I just started playing the game, and earlier tonight while going through the tutorials I got a single beep and a message from the ATI Control Panel telling me that my video card was overheating and to check to make sure all the fans in my computer where functioning properly. I checked my Control Panel (ATI Overdrive) and found that the video card was running at 78 C. Is this overheating problem caused because I have all the game options set to their highest settings or something else? Any help would be greatly appreciated as I've never encountered this problem before. By the way, I'm using the Catalyst 5.13 drivers.

Maybe the heatsink is not seated properly on the card. Try taking it off, applying some arctic silver and reseating it. If that doesn't work you could consider buying an Arctic Cooling VGA silencer

If your a newbie at this, just make sure the big heatsink on ur card is well stuck against the card and that the fan spins up....
Otherwise, get that warrenty put to good use before it goes. |

Does the GPU fan speed up when playing?
i was the same never a proplem with a game until i started playing F.E.A.R then the GPU temp got to high and the card was then underclocked. mine is a sapphire x850xt and noticed the fan only ever speeded up when the pc started up. so now i have to use ati tray tools to change the fan speed at the temperature increases. http://www.hardwareheaven.com/amd-graphics-cards/92560-x850-fan-speed-problem.html

Thanks for all the help and suggestions, guys. I've d/l the ATI Tray Tools utility and set up the fan speed controls. I'll see what that does, and while I'm at it I'll look into a GPU cooler. However, I've been considering upgrading to ATI's R580 (x1900) when it comes out, so I may hold off on the GPU cooler for awhile.
