exclamation ATi 9600 Pro artifacting in ATi Tray Tools at stock

Hi,

I've had this card since 2 years and a bit ago, about november 2003. I'm getting artifacting at stock speeds in ATi tray tools when scanning for artifacts. I noticed it was mostly the memory clock speed aftecting the artifacting. (If I turn it lower than stock I can see it artifacts less often) It is version 1.0.4.780 of ATT which come w/ the omega drivers.

Am I mistaken, or does this have a 3 year warranty? What could/should I tell them if I wanna send it in?

The card was never overclocked*.

*COugh.

Tell them its defective. It is, isn't it?

But they can tell if you've overclocked it, as to weather they will bother to determine that or not is another question

Interesting, I didn't know they could. What specifically do I tell them is defective? That I tested w/ some application usually used for overclocking is kind of suspicious. (I'm also gonna need to put the stock cooler back on, right now I have a custom made cooler on from an old fan and heatsink) <--I doubt that's the problem though cause mostly the problem arises from memory. I can run at +80MHz core in games w/ no lock ups so I don't think my cooler is the issue.

However some new news: I underclocked the memory to 270 and the GPU to 370. I then let ATi Tray tools find the max GPU and it found 391 which is less than 398 stock.

see people think that but then in genral then people wonder what drives
up the costs of video cards and wine about how much they cost now

BTW: just like over clocking changeing the cooling voids most MFG warrentys
too and they again they might be able to tell... but you neverknow

I do'nt think they'll be able to tell cause I actually RMA'd this once before soon after purchase when the fan started to make noise and I had put AS3 on the fan and they didnt' say anything.

But seriously, what should I tell them the problem is? I'm going to try remounting the cooler now and seeing what's going on.

Well yeah I agree 90% of the time unless the card is melted or severely abnormal they won't care

Ok. I have replaced the original heatsink+fan w/ a little AS3. At stock clocks, I still get artifacts found in ATi Tools. However, leaving GPU at 398 (stock) and underclocking memory to around 275 (from 297 stock) gives me no errors. Anything higher than this on memory spits out artifacts in ATi tray tool. Seems to be the memory.

How trustworthy is this ATi tool anyway?

ATI Tool is a good tool, I trust my eyes more than I do it though.

Its just a tool, I'd trust results of OCing in tests of playing certain demanding games for hours on end (sort of like you'd regularily do) and see if it holds out against that. Treat it as more of a tool to help you start a little father towards the limits

Any video card should be able to run it at stock speeds without ANY artifact reports though, right?

Yes that is true. My card on stock and even OC'ed can go on toughest setting for over 24 hours

There's a setting for toughness?

Screw it I'm RMAing this biatch. What should I tell them though? I need to tell them how to recreate the problem. Should I say to use ATi Tray tools?

Do you know if they still have 9600pro's in stock? Maybe I should wait until they don't so they give me something better?

No don't say they use any of that... they'll have to give you something at least equivalent or better, so don't worry.

Just say its defective and you get major screen artifacts. Thats all they need to know

But when they test it they'll see there are no major screen artifacts. You think they won't even test?

Ok ATi tool will now go up to these clocks from stock of 398.25/297.00 to 448.20/289.80 without any artifacts. However, I'm not liking the underclock on the memory.

If they do they should find the same artifacts. If they don't they'd better take your word for it or risk you hopping on down to your local BBB and reporting them as having bad customer support
