I would only buy a mac if they had more support and compatibility for games.

Re: Would you ever contemplate buying a mac?

See The only way I would buy a Mac is if they NATIVELY supported games and I didn't have to restart and boot into a different OS. The only reason I would consider buying a Mac is for the operating system so its kind of a moot point there

There are games made for OSX like Call Of Duty 4 - this is a native OSX game and it runs great too on the 8600 and 9600 I used ... there are others like the latest Command and Conquer and even Sims 3. You won't get the same number of games for the platform however as they won't sell as many. The bulk of games are made for Windows, can't see it ever changing. After speaking with a few game company representatives it seems the most money is in the console market due to the increasing piracy percentages. Who knows, we may all end up gaming on the Playstation 5 in the future when no PC games are being made !

Fat chance that happening. PC gaming will continue just fine. When they make good games with good support they will sell plenty of copies. When they release buggy games, ridden with problems and drm issues, or with stupid requirements, they will blame piracy. Just look at the Flatout series. They sold good on the PC with their first 2 titles, then went greedy and for whatever reason decided to abandon PC for their next game in the series. I think E.T. sold more copies than the Flatout "3" for the Xbox 360.

There were always games made for the Apple computers. Some of them well known Windows games, others just for the Apple computers. I believe if they try to push the selling of downloadable games, the sales will increase for them. Gamersgate already sells them, it's a start. If Apple creates an itunes for games for their computers, then it would work even better, given time. The numbers of titles and individual sales will not be even close to PC sales, but with some clever moves, they could sell enough to give some well needed flow to the sales of games under OSX (or whatever). There is certainly nothing wrong with the platform.

Can you say App Store?

It wouldn't even be that difficult since they already have everything in place to replicate something like that onto their PC dept. Not to mention since almost 95% of Mac stuff is proprietary it would be very easy for them to filter games based on system specs. Basically you only see the games that you are capable of running on the system that you are downloading them for. Also, integrating it into the iTunes account system would be a great system because that would allow you (much like the iPhone and iTouch) to get all of your games in the event that you upgrade systems or have multiple systems.

Macs are brilliant PCs I think because I have never been more creative in Photoshop than on a Mac. The mouse just feels smoother, higher DPI? Idk

Do you even know what and where you post? Do you even read what has been written in threads other than the lost post?

You just contradict yourself.. ruining threads with useless comments..

I am considering buying an Apple in the next few months strictly for video editing, though there are many if's so it isn't even close to certain.

Any idea when the next "generation" of desktop systems will arrive?

Because Sandy Bridge's intro in the desktop space isn't for the high end (Xeon), it's likely going to be toward the end of the year unless Apple decides to do a single processor Mac Pro refresh sooner, I would think.

How about a 27" iMac with NAS for the media? The screen is truly scrumptious - remember, it's IPS LED backlit @ 2560x1440. Sandy Bridge "could" be incorporated within months, if not weeks...

No. iPods and iPhones and iPads are wonderful, but Apple is too limiting in their technical aspects for desktops. Perhaps for a laptop.

Re: Would you ever contemplate buying a mac?

Thanks for the replies guys. Thankfully (?) I don't have to decide right now. I did a quick search here and the prices are crazy high. As you can see here Desktop PC ? ???????? ???????????? ??????????? APPLE | Multirama

All stores here have similar prices for them. If you notice, they don't even sell Mac Pro. I guess they would sell it for 10000 euros lol.

Hopefully the new ones appear in a few months at a reduced price.

The iMacs are good, but hardly the best for any expansion (I am not going to buy extra HDD and RAM from Apple when I do) or with the fastest CPU.

Apple in the euro countries are outrageously expensive. You are better off getting an other manufacturer, they often offer better bang-for-buck compared to Apple.

Not when you want to use Apple specific software

All apple specific software has as good if not better Windows equivalents.

And they're cheaper. And by that, I mean....yargh, matey >_>.

In the event you NEED a mac, go with a macbook. Honestly.

I am talking about using it as a tool for job, not to have some fun on my own to see what it is like.
Yes, there are similar programs, but not the same programs.

Re: Would you ever contemplate buying a mac?

I think the point is that the similar programs are better.

That's entirely subjective.

The point is, only Apple computers run Final Cut Pro and unless they start developing a version for Windows, I will need an Apple.

Re: Would you ever contemplate buying a mac?

At this point i would not consider buying one. As long as Windows is around, seeing how i'm used to it, i don't care for Apple.

BlueMak, what does FC have exactly that is better than Premiere or Vegas? I'll have to try FC one day to see what all the fuss is about.

Re: Would you ever contemplate buying a mac?

I don't know all the details of FCP and others to say that this feature that exists in FCP makes it better than the rest.
I have used a few professional programs and I felt completely "at home" with FCP. It's hard to explain, it felt better to use than any other I have tried before.
Trust me I don't just say this because of the hardware platform, I am not exactly a fan of Apple lol.

Wrong.

Apple's "Pro" series of apps, while they may have Windows/cross-platform competitors, none are overall "better" than Logic, Final Cut or Aperture. I'm not saying these apps are overall "better" either, it depends on the user, and their requirements.

I made the jump to a Mac Pro to get Logic (I was using the outdated Windows version until 2007) None of the competing apps I tried (Pro Tools, Cubase, Live, Reason) suited the way I wanted to work.

I also use Aperture for my photography business, it's quite full featured, and significantly cheaper than it's main competitor Lightroom - plus it had the capability of integrating fully with the iPhoto library, which is what I was using beforehand, to make the migration quick and painless.

Logic similarly works with Garageband sessions and Final Cut with iMovie, so any unfinished projects can be migrated and/or tweaked with the advanced features of the "Pro" version. Not something that can be said for many of the competing "Pro" apps - many don't have a beginner/consumer version (looking at Pro Tools and Premiere here)

Not everyone needs a laptop. A Mac Pro is a stupidly powerful machine, especially for heavy processing like that required for Final Cut

Re: Would you ever contemplate buying a mac?

I believe your title of apple fanboy is deserved.

In terms of raw power and capabilities, Windows has alternatives/equivalents. If you are going to argue that Final Cut Pro has more meat and bones in it than Vegas or Premiere is just stupid. They're similar, but a heavily-modded Premiere is a dream to work in for video editing.

And as for the laptop comment -- given the hardware, you are overpaying. You're paying $500+ for the OS. I refuse to do that -- sure, it's a great OS and all, but really? A hackintosh can serve me just as well.

Edit: Not looking to get into a flame war. I'm not bashing the software itself, but there are Windows/Unix equivalents. I find it stupid that you need to buy a specific computer with an OS in order to get one specific program. That's just dumb, imho.

Re: Would you ever contemplate buying a mac?

You find it stupid but you do the same thing, just towards the other side.
As for the rest of the post, too lazy to answer, but I will say one thing, use Final Cut Pro for at least a few weeks, then tell me it isn't worth it. I have used it, and Premier and even Purple (PC both), and yes, I find FCP a better experience.

blibbax, do you use pro video editing software or at least have used extensively? Was Final Cut Pro among them?

No, and I didn't comment on any specifics relating to them for that reason.

I said, contrary to your post #87, that Synthesis does not buy a "specific computer with an OS just to get one specific program".

As was hinted to above, however, I don't think there's anything to be achieved through a flame war. As such I'm happy to accept that I'm not especially qualified to comment. I've only used Mac Pros once in my life. It was for 2 weeks only, about 3.5 years ago, and didn't involve video editing.
