Apple iPhone: iTunes required for set-up

Apple iPhone buyers will require an iTunes Store account in order to set up the iPhone, Apple has told potential customers. The move has sparked speculation that iTunes Store account information could be used to add an additional layer of software locking for iPhone users.

In a circular sent to those who registered for information on the iPhone, Apple informed would-be iPhone purchasers that they should know their iTunes Store account name and password. If they didn't yet have one, they should set up an iTunes Store account now "to save time later".

In one of the recent news articles, Apple said it wants Safari to have as much of an impact and gain as much market share as iTunes has.

Well no duh iTunes is used a lot! Apple forces every consumer to use their program

How the hell is Apple forcing their software on anyone? That is the same argument when people bitch about MS.

Not everybody, just consumers..

Well, I think it is rather annoying when you want Quicktime, on their site you MUST download iTunes along with it (or vise-versa).

Also, songs you buy from Apple can ONLY be used on iTunes, on THAT account. Now I know that you can just record the sound from your soundcard, but that can get a bit of a hassle sometimes.

And now, when you buy an iPhone, you MUST use iTunes and set up an account, thus generating a higher market share percentage. (Though you can't really blame them when they have such a low market share altogether..)

Yea, there are minimal third-party alternatives to some things, but the average Joe doesn't know about those

I don't care much for Apple, iPods, or even Microsoft for that manner. Just my $.02

It's cool, it's Apple! They are so freaking cool, so even some of their shitty products are cool, because they are white and has an apple on them...

The iPhone is pretty and all, but a unique phone is it not, the lack of HSPDA, flash support and 3rd party apps are killers.
