iPhone 3G Thread
So, who here has the iPhone 3G? I'm considering picking one up. I currently don't have a cell phone (yes, I am the last on the planet), so I'm wondering what you all think about it. From my limited testing, it seems pretty slick, especially with the App Store up and running.
So, give me some pros and cons.

I picked mine up on July 15 (to hell with waiting in line) and it's the first smart phone I've ever owned. Until now I've always taken the free phone.
I do have to admit I'm in love with the damn thing. It's slick, easy to use and with the new Apps Store you have a lot of possibilities to personalize it. I'm not sure if you're in the States or not, but if so a few things to be aware of: Edge Network is SLOW. If you're in a bigger city that has the 3G network it is much faster. Cost is the same as AT&T's other smart phone plans, but compared to other networks it is a bit higher. I've noticed typing can be sluggish but version 2.0.1 of the firmware was released last night and I haven't had a chance to test it so it may have improved. I've had a few dropped calls but I'm not sure if it was from my end or the person I was calling. I also subscribed to MobileMe which, thankfully, I've had success with. Synching between your computer(s), online through me.com and your phone is a snap and very convenient. If you have any specific questions feel free to PM me and I'll do what I can to answer. If you end up picking up an iPhone I think you'll be happy with it.

Most people that i know that have the new iPhone say that its 1000 times better than the first version. Mostly due to the 3G network addition. I have considered picking one up myself but I have a TILT that I have all hacked and pretty that im hooked on currently so it looks like it will be awhile before I pick up anything

Seth if I were you I would wait and see what other companies like Nokia has in their plans to "kill" the iPhone.

The one thing I really like about my HTC TILT (8925) is the REAL GPS reciever in it and not that triangulation thing that the iphone does. The only thing I think that my phone is outdone by the iPhone is in storage space. So far SDHC hasn't gotten far enough to provide an affordable amount of storage bigger than ~4GB in a micro SD card.
The other thing is that I use a third party program on my storage card similar to Tom Tom so I don't have to pay for that TeleNav garbage from AT&T. To be honest with you i know the principle behind the iPhone's GPS and I know how it works but what I don't know is whether you have to be on the EDGE network for maps etc like the TeleNav service.

Re: iPhone 3G Thread
I have an iPhone, and I'm pretty much sold on it. Apple Mobile Technologies are absolutely AMAZING.
I've few to no complaints, if only because the sheer utility vastly outweighs the few hiccups I've encountered, and the phone is made even better with MobileMe, especially if you're using it as a light business phone. (Which it still does quite well.) It's also my current car stereo library, thanks to an iPod hookup in my car, though it doesn't charge, as it uses the old-style plug. (Btw, anyone know if there's an adapter available that can be used to conver the old-style plug with the iPhone/iPod Touch?) To add to this, bluetooth in the car = auto music mute to answer calls on the road without a headset or anything of that sort. Few other things I use it for... 1. The Remote app is AWESOME, especially for HTPC's and/or an AppleTV. No need for a remote. 2. Recorder apps for recording meets/lectures in class. As well as the music recognition apps. 3. VNC functionality over WiFi or 3G. - Anyone who has played WoW may have encountered a login queue at some point. I used to use a VNC app (and server at home, though not anymore) to log into WoW at my home computer, while I was sitting in rush hour traffic 5 miles away. Queue dodging at it's finest. Also good for accessing files on your home computer while you're away, or e-mailing them to yourself. Becareful though, I hear VNC isn't exactly secure. 4. House Control - Many folks have integrated computers in their homes, to remotely turn on/off appliances, lights, lock or unlock doors, open the garage, even turn on showers, hot-tubs or any kind of home automation (which is becoming cheaper and cheaper) can be used with an iPhone and the right app. 5. Currently a friend of mine is working on an App (Me + any kind of coding = disaster) that I'm going to try and use with my phone and an onboard computer in my car, to act as a remote start via my iPhone. Sadly, we've discovered it's a lot more difficult than just energizing a relay, and I'm no where near an engineer. ![]() Basically - iPhone = Win. |

the only difference between accessories designed for the iPhone and those designed for the iPod is the value of a resistor (or two) across several pins in the dock connector - if you've got the know-how, changing that resistor could make your car iPhone ready - pinout ishere
