Mobile Me

Anyone else here using it?

Apple - MobileMe

So far i'm a bit over halfway in to the 2 month trial, never really bothered with it when I just had my desktop, same with the .Mac trial - i signed up and simply forgot about it.

But now I've got both a Mac Pro and a Macbook Air, i've found Mobile Me is really handy to keep my calendar and address book sync'ed, along with being able to access them from a friend's computer or at work, and while that alone is not worth AU$119 a year, i've started to use the iDisk (20gb online storage) and Gallery services a bit lately.

While I know places like facebook, myspace and photobucket have free gallery services, I like the one-touch uploading from iPhoto to the MobileMe gallery - the main factor against me uploading heaps of photos to say my facebook account, is that I tend to get really annoyed with the upload dialogs, to the point where I just can't be bothered.

The iDisk service is another thing that I've recently found handy, it lets me store a whole heap of files privately, that I can access on the go (from a friend's house, or a file I don't want to keep on my macbook air for size reasons), in addition to posting files in a "public" folder - letting me host my DJ sets, productions etc. I'm also tempted to move over my website there, and keep my current 100mb host just as a redirect, allowing me to host larger files. I think there's about 200gb bandwidth per month too.

It'll also sync calendar and address book data with outlook on a windows machine, but it's a little more limited than on OS X.

The one feature I haven't been able to test is sync'ing with an iPhone/iPod Touch, considering I don't own one (nor want to) but that's supposedly just as integrated as with OS X.

And while $119/yr might sound like a bit much, and there are most likely cheaper/free alternatives out there, the tight integration with my macs is what really sold me on Mobile Me, and when I think about it, it's only $10 a month - so I'm quite tempted to keep my subscription after the trial ends.

Anyone else have thoughts?

Re: Mobile Me

I think it works well but I haven't paid for it to be honest. might spend some more time with it next week. I really only use one mac for work and email so im not sure its worth it overall for me. I do own an ipod touch but I dont use it for anything apart from videos and music on the move.

I like the idisk and online aspects however as they are very well handled.

Re: Mobile Me

looks like I can get Mobile Me to host my domain aswell - makes things easier

I still haven't paid for it yet, but it's getting more tempting as I'm really hoping to improve my music/dj'ing skills and profile this year, and use Mobile Me's storage as my online platform to launch myself

Re: Mobile Me

I played with it a little last night. I think for what you are getting (the 20gb storage and basically unlimited bandwidth), that its a very reasonable price. I like the contacts and email backup, that is very useful for a professional. Might invest myself once my free trial is due to run out.

Re: Mobile Me

I'm a paid subscriber. I don't take advantage of all the features, but I do appreciate how well it syncs up with my calendar, address book and e-mail. The cost is a little much though...

Re: Mobile Me

very nice DJ. I have been playing with it myself quite a bit in the last day and I love the way the idisk mounts on the desktop like a hard drive meaning you can upload and download files without the need for an FTP client.

I have using it to sync my files between a few macintosh actually and im stunned how well it handles everything, particularly email/address book and other important information.

Once my 2 month trial is up I think ill opt for the service. no point paying now when they give 2 free months !

I actually don't think its that expensive in the long run because of the insane bandwidth they offer with it. 200 gigabyte a month transfer is a hell of a lot and would even cover most businesses.

Re: Mobile Me

don't think so, not yet - so far the iphone seems like an ipod touch with a phone application, from what i've seen on my mates' iphones it doesn't look like a real phone - and besides, it's too expensive
