Hi, I have a Macbook pro 15" with snow leopard and recently I had a strange problem.
I own also a custom made enclousure, AZIO is the brand. I've never had a problem, but the other day when the electricity gone, the enclousure turned off but not the same the MB pro (battery, of course). Snow Leopard said that there was a problem in the disc (because of the electric failure) but when the electricity returned (I didn't turned off the enclouysre) I wasn't able to write data in the external disc, but can read it. I turned off the enclosure and Snow Leopard didn't recognized it. In fact, the disc started to sound strange, like a siren or an alarm... Such a strange sound. I tried conecting it on a PC without the enclousure, but the same sound was produced. What do you think? I hace about 300 GB of valuable data there and I don't want to lose it... Any idea? Thanks to all guys |

Re: Dead external hard drive
It doesn't sound good. how did you connect it to the PC without the enclosure?
You might want to try it with another PC to make sure.

Put your drive in the freezer for an hour than try it again. If you think I am pulling your nutsack, I am not.

Also, if it works after that, COPY all files, because it won't work for ever.

Re: Dead external hard drive
I can vouch for that It worked for my 40Gb Hdd
![]() @ PC_Inquisitor it sounds to me like the Hdd has kicked the bucket(dead) the weird sound is a dead giveaway that the mechanism for reading the Hdd is stuck or scratching the head

Re: Dead external hard drive
Odd how the freezer trick works. I suppose metal contracts when it gets cold so it may help out with the moving parts some how.
If this doesn't work and you are out of options you could take it to a company that specializes in data recovery but I doubt you'll like the cost. |

but yes, if the freezer trick does manage to get your drive in working order - backup immediately! (Then back up again, so you've got at least two copies of everything you want to keep, preferably three - keep one at the office)

Re: Dead external hard drive
If it works make sure you have plenty of room elsewhere to copy your files ASAP.
