I saw this thread front page and was about to reply when I saw it was removed? What happened? I was furious about this as well and was going to reply as I have been involved in discussion on it on other forums.

Yeah ive seen a thread on a few other big sites and OCZ commented in some forum on it. Seems newegg might be doing something fishy with their pricing. I think they might need to sort it out now.

Apologies. I used a quote from OCZ which they didn't want me to use. I should have cleared it totally first, so in the interests of being courteous to them I removed it all.

The situation is that the OCZ vertex mac drive is basically the same as the PC version and Newegg are charging a lot more for it. OCZ have assured me they are working on the pricing but want everyone to know that there are extra costs involved with the certification and due to the fact they don't sell so many the costs are always going to be higher.

Yeah I posted about this a while ago but no one replied.

I think its scandalous and someone needs to hold their hand up and admit its been a con. I mean I appreciate people expect mac users to pay more, but I don't get the point that "because they sell less they charge more" - its the same drive as the PC version with a different sticker and im sure a sticker doesn't cost $100 to produce. It should cost about $20 for the big version and maybe $10 for the smaller ones, that would cover the certification costs.

Whole thing is disgraceful.

wow thats quite a markup on the big drive. you could almost buy two PC ones for that.

I can't see newegg doing that though, surely it stands out a mile, are OCZ ripping off their customers?

Shame you had to remove it Zardon because its about time a big site like Driverheaven talked about some pricing issues, and its not just OCZ either I have seen this a few times before with other products.

I don't care about macintosh products, but the fact this is a blatant PC drive and they get some nonsense certification from apple (to make it slower?!) then charge about 40% more? Thats a really expensive sticker and certification. Rip off, buy the intel X25, its better anyway.

I am a big fan of OCZ, always have been so I doubt they have done anything wrong. That said, the fact they asked you to remove a perfectly good response makes me believe something fishy is going on - no names were mentioned and it explained a good bit about OCZ being honest with their units. I read the post and Zardon basically just said that the drive didn't cost much more, which is a clear contradiction to what newegg have decided to charge - about 35-40% more on all the drives. OCZ covering Neweggs ass here? Some theories on this over at Anandtech and Hardocp which i have been reading.

I also totally disagree with the theory that because they sell less of the Macintosh version that they have to charge more. Its the SAME drive ! I even hear the latest PC firmware is IDENTICAL !

I heard from OCZ this morning that they are working with Newegg to get the prices more competitive for the macintosh people.
