rerun the Disk Defragmenter on the volume then at after it's finished click view report and save it, then post the data of the report. maybe the defrag's report will explain somethings.

try any third-party disk defrag utility tool (but perfectdisk 7 is preffered) that will do an offline files defrag upon system boots.

well some large files that are open, in use, or other wise unmoveable
won't be defragmented. I see that message ad useally there is one file
that couldn't be moved to be defraged.

as for Total MFT fragments = 3

You'll need to use a boot time defragmenter like perfict disk or diskeeper
to get all you files back in check and elminate the MFT fragments.

that too.

an offline files defrag job upon system boots needs to be performed .
after you have done the offline files defrag, try rerun the in-built disk defragmenter to see its report again...

unless you have anothre NT system that can do the disk defrag for the problem partition over a network or a bootable CD/DVD utility program like wininternals defrag manager in an advanced mode upon system boots.

not 100% sure, but another possible cause for this... if this is applied to you... a file that is left over from the previous dual boot set up that the system or you do not have rights over... locate the file(s) then take control..., and then run the defrag job again and see.

the previously dual boot files is an example that i can think of, because you may know which files that might be the problem files and are to check it or look for... anyway, since the in-built disk defrag program does not tell you the problem file name, so you need to try to use a third-party disk defrag utility tool to locate it. after you know the problem file name, you can decide whether to move it from the problem partition to another... them move it back in once you have done another disk defrag job... or just try running an offline files defrag with the tools and like i said before and then see...

Well the offline thingy worked... It defraged just fine...

Now my question is, can't you defrag during bootup with the normal defragger?

you have to explain that to me again, esp, the normal defragger? you mean the in-built one?

if you have problem like this first you need to locate the problem file(s), then after that you can decide what to do with it... an easy way is to use a third-party disk defrag program... to locate it or to see whether or not the problem that you're having is caused by a file(s) that cannot be moved by the in-built disk defrag (or other disk defrag program) or by other causes like a software bug from third-party program...

if the problem file is a large system file like a 4GB of pagefile and you want to defrag it from another NT-based system but the system or the disk defrag program won't allow you to and it only allow to be ran under an offline file defrag job, then you can rename the file from something like pagefile.sys to pagefile.old the disk defrag program will then move this file just like it's an online file. then rename it back...
or sometimes are just faster to move a large file from the partition to another then run disk defrag and move the file back in after.

Perfect Disk 7 is awesome. I can never get it to complete a boot time defrag on my Main C partition though, and I have heard at least 3 people say the same. I wonder why. It does boot time on all other partitions and the partition my page file is.

if the partition has been marked as dirty and/or there is an uncompleted chkdsk job or for some reason the disk autochk that is supposed to be ran and fix/remove the dirty bit on every system boots by default cannot be performed. that causes and prevents the disk defrag to perform the boot time defrag eventho it has been scheduled for. the dirty bit needs to be removed before boottime defrag can be ran...

Seems the problem didn't go... I reinstalled XP on both HDs, formated em both and reinstalled my setup as usual and the problem is still here (even after a MFT defrag!!! )

could be due to you always have some files that cannot be moved, and it gives you a warning that 'some files on the volume could not be defragmented', don't worry about that just keep using the third-party disk defrag program, try not to run any programs while defragging your drives. if you like to keep your computer on all the time then schedule the disk defrag program to be ran when you're not using your computer and do the offline files defrag like every week or other week or so... you should be okay.
