Memory leak?
Hello guys.
What is memory leak and how do I check it? My system seems rather slow considering its horse power.(AthlonXP1800, GeForce4400, nForce1 MB) Thanks. |

The biggest thing that will tell you if you have a memory think, and what is leaking it, is your OS. What are you running? XP? 98? ME?

I doubt you have a memory leak. Why would you think that you would have a memory leak anyways?

I do not really know anything about memory leak. Somebody told me the other day that if my system does not perform well as it should I should suspect memory leak(?)
As you can see in my spec I have Ti4400. I know that a single benchmark test would not tell the overall performance of a system but I got about 800 with the new 3DMark 2003. I found that most of people with Ti4200 128MB and same CPU as mine got over 1000 with no overclocking. Some of them even have less than 512MB system memory. It was same situation with the old version of 3DMark SE. What I am saying is this is consistant lacking in performance. In time, I started to think my machine is not as fast as it should be. Also, occasionally, my screen redraws the desktop and when it does that I can see the slow redrawing process of icons. Same thing happens when I open a new window or when I move my mouse over 'Start' --> 'Program'. I can see it redraws all the iocons in my program list. This happens quite often, well, all the time nowadays. I don't even load up many programs when I boot up. Of course, I don't really know this has anything to do with 'memory leak' Can you explain me what's is causing these symptoms? Thanks Last edited by blix9; Feb 13, 2003 at 04:11 PM. |

Dude, what are your system specs? That score is ridiculous. I'm gettin almost 1800 with my Ti4200 (hella overclocked).

Dude, if you are running XP Pro, then I would not worry about a memory leak. Unless you have some funky ass programs open that are accessing the net 24/7.

Thanks for your input, Euro.
Then, what seems to be the cause of the symptoms I mentioned in earlier post? I don't think I have any funky program that access internet 24/7. I have Norton Anti-virus installed the other day and it's got auto-update turned on but I don't think that's causing the problem. The performance was like that even before I had Norton Anti-virus installed. What would be the possible cause of the slow performance? And, what's with the slow icon redrawing thing on my desktop? Do you have any clue? I thought I maintain my system regularly including all the registry clean up business. |

Dude, you have to throughly explain your problem. What are all the things that you are causing you to believe that you are having a memory link.

I really can't think of any. Is there some typical cause of slow performance with fairly decent machine?

Hmmm... it sounds to me like you probably have a bunch of background processes running - when you first boot up, hit ctrl-alt-del and post here the names of all of the threads that aren't running next to the word "SYSTEM" (and if there are just a hell of a lot, post that there are a lot instead...)

Dude, are you sure that you are getting "slow performance"? Has the performance of the rig just slowly deteriorated over time? Or is it just an instant drop in performance?

I think it was slowly deteriorated in time but at some point recently it decresed a lot in short time. Also, my 3Dmark score was never in the range of other machines likely configured with even little less horse power.

Dude, I have no clue. Try a scandisk and a defrag...? See if that does anything. Check to see if you have any processes that are running that you don't need running?

euro, you might wanna cut back on starting all your replies with dude. =p
also, blix.. your low score could possibly be that you do have background processes running, like NAV.. to get the highest possible performance from your computer, you shouldn't have too many things running in the background (none, if you can). for example, on bootup, my computer only loads one program, aka. only has one icon beside the clock.

What can I get rid of it? Can I actually get rid of it all and have Windows running with no problem? I just looked at tem and it seems like they are all necessary.

I'm not sure about WinXP, so someone else will have to tell you which
processes are required and which isn't.. I use Win98se myself.

Turned out it was a bad uninstall of a video driver, basically one day I just did a very thorough inspection of the registry and found some 'remains' of an older driver. So what I did was to uninstall the current video driver and reinstall, everything worked fine and the problem was fixed. I have an ATI board, I used the guide listed in the ATI driver section, but I think you can find support in the nVidia section for driver problems...

i suggest backup, saving ur files and settings and reformatting. use that ad-aware program to keep the junk such as the gayest program every made (cept for porno!) kazaa.. use kazaa lite. all the porn, none of the spyware. xp doesnt really leak, but using ad-aware will get rid of programs which run without u knowning so becareful. thorough check disk and a good defrag helps also and keeping the disk usage under 60%
