Internet Security

Currently using Norton Internet Security 2006, Webroot Spy Sweper and router+firewall. XP Pro SP2, Firefox 2.0.0.1, Thunderbird 1.5.0.9.

Got Norton when it came free with mobo about 18 months ago and is ok but uses rediculous amount of memory.

Anyone advise me (from their experience) of a good and reliable alternative security suite that is reasonably compatible with Mozilla. Doesn't need to be free (but it helps!!). Does need to reduce the use of RAM.

Sorry if this sounds similar to another thread but they are not us FF & Tbird...

Thanks

I've beta tested NIS 2006 last year and found that it eats as much memory than zonealarm firewall (freeware)... I'm currently running NIS 2007.5 BETA and it uses around 15 Mb mem...

So you have firewall in your router? Then windows built in firewall is ok. All you need is good AV aplication.

I use a totally free and very powerful resource. It's called my brain.
- Don't use IE, if you do then turn off ActiveX, Java/JVScript and the other scripting options in the Security tab.
- Don't open e-mails/attachments from unknown senders.
- Don't use p2p programs like Kazaa/BearShare/etc. If you download EXEs/RARs/ZIPs/whatever, scan them with Kaspersky (the best anti-virus www.av-comparatives.org)!!!
- Get a hardware firewall such as a router, or take some old rig and put a Linux distro on it and have your network traffic filtered by it.
- Use computer sense while following the above guidelines.

Webroot 5 is an amazing peice of software

I also have access to corporate AV software through school, but even on a non-corporate level, from what I can tell, AVG and FSecure are both nice

Do you know what the difference is between NIS 2007 and NAV 2007? I was using NPF 2006 + NAV 2006 + Router. Now i see Symantec doesn't have a NPF 2007 (discontinued?) and has implemented some firewall into NAV.
My NAV is about to expire and if i decide to continue with Symantec do i get NIS 2007 + my router or use my router, windows firewall and just get NAV 2007?

As far as I know NAV 2007 won't have firewall. for NPF I can't say anything. I guess that it's discontinued. They are launching few new products this month since vista... so thats might be why NPF is discontinued.

Thanks BTW for all responses.

I'm gonna go with either NOD32 or Kaspersky when my subscription finishes. Seem to have excellent reviews.

Yes, my router has firewall hardware. You saying that XPs firewall supplements this satisfactorily?

Edit: It'll be NOD32 cos good independent result scoring http://www.av-comparatives.org/ and http://www.checkvir.com/

Kaspersky takes up slightly more memory, is known for being a bit buggy on occasion, and takes longer to scan then NOD32. However, it has a higher detection rate.

NOD32 scans faster, takes up less memory, not so buggy, but a slightly lower detection rate.

Overall though, they are the two best ones.

Anyways, my security (after research) for when Norton expires next month will be:

Firewall
Harware router firewall
Comodo software firewall (free)

Antivirus
ESET NOD32 £23

Spyware
Webroot Spy Sweeper (already subscribed) £25
Lavasoft Ad-Aware (free)
Microsoft Defender (free - already subscribed)
Javacool SpywareBlaster 3.5.1 (free)
Spybot Search & Destroy (free)

The reason for software firewall on top of router as that nearly all independent review sites recommend this setup for maximum protection.

Spy Sweeper is reckoned to be best spyware software according to most sites. They all recommend that it should be supplemented by several other free programs to maximise protection.
