Have you checked with the manufacturer of the DVD drive to see if there's a firmware update? Many of them do have updates over the past couple of months.

Also, you really don't give us much to work with here. What OS? Is it up-to-date? What else is 'under the hood' of your PC?

Is the drive having any other problems seeing media or anything? If so try this KB.

ya-sry bout the lack of info-WIN XP OS all is up to date so far as i know-haven't checked to see if there is new FW updates, i got the DVD from a friend recently and installed it fine, it is recognized when i turn on the comp and i can see it in the media list. seems to play audio CDs fine and i can hear it spin up when i put in a movie (and a little DVD shows up and blinks next to the mouse) but then nothing... the DVD unit itself is a pioneer(115 i think) and the Nero i was using was the 7.o version download that links off the DVDshrink site. if i put in a movie and manually open the nero home app and select play DVD movie off the E drive the drive will spin up but then like i said i get the little box with the " drive is not ready" message in it.
loke i said i haven't checked for the firmware updates-any links or suggestions for me?? as is probably obvious, i'm fairly new to this side of the comp so any handholding or coddling wil be appreciated and any flaming will be expected.

In order to determine which FW your current DVD drive has, do this:

Go into Device Manager

Expand the DVD/CD-ROM drive section by clicking on the + at the front.

You should now see your current DVD drive name listed.

Right click on that drive and then select Properties

On the next screen select the Details tab.

On the next screen you should see Device Instance Id in the dropdown area.

Now, on mine, the line below this is now pretty long. I need to scroll right to see all of it. But, I have on this line the actual model number of my DVD drive and....with considerable space....the FW revision number.

If you don't see this number on this line, try using that dropdown option and then select:

Hardware Ids

Now, you should see several lines of text with the model number of the DVD drive and the FW revision toward the end.

Give us this information before proceeding.

OK, if you're in Europe, it appears that there's been a few FW updates since the 1.11 revision listed.

Check out this site, and look around for the particular DVD writer you have. Download the appropriate FW revision and follow EXACTLY all instructions.

Good luck!

Well, the only location I can come up with that shows a FW update for a Pioneer DVD-115 is here:

http://www.pioneer.eu/eur/content/su.../software.html

Just download the file along with the 'atapi-up.zip' file just below the section where this update is located.

Unzip both and especially read through the unzipped atapi-up readme.

Good luck!
