Mozilla Firefox 3.0.4 - Fail to Close Process

This is a new one for me and I'm just checking to see if anyone else has encountered this.

I closed my FF browser a moment ago and started up CCleaner to clean up things before calling it quits for this session.

Well, CCleaner threw up a warning that I needed to close FF in order to clear the cache. From all appearances on the Desktop and in the Taskbar, it WAS closed. So, I started up the Task Manager and, sure enough, the firefox.exe process was still active. I had to manually End Task on it.

Afterwards, CCleaner did its thing without anymore complaints.

So, has anyone else had this happen? And, is there any particular cause for it to happen? Or, just a bug?

Re: Mozilla Firefox 3.0.4 - Fail to Close Process

I've noticed this with Firefox too. Apparently it's a very common issue with different problems being reported, and a whole slew of suggestions on causes and possible fixes. In my case I might close Firefox after having done something on a site, then realizing I forgot to go to such and such site I try to open it again only to have that error pop up. Eventually it will close on it's own though unless I'm doing something else that is taking up resources, in which case it will take a while for FF to completely shut down.

Why is this happening? cache issue, maybe, and it's taking Firefox longer to close because of this? Another thought is that I have about 10 plugins installed (4 are part of AdBlock, No Script, Foxmarks, Old Style Comeback, Download Statusbar, plus Canadian Dictionary), so could it be that the more plugins I have, the longer it takes to close Firefox? One suggestion I read is that it could be caused by anti-virus software, or actively scanning anti-malware programs, and that these software are delaying Firefox from shutting down. Another suggestion is that it is the operating system, or rather a certain setting that might be the cause, and that has to do with the speed and forced nature of having Windows unloading DLLs from memory (if you've used TuneXP, then you should be familiar with this setting). If it shuts down too quickly it could corrupt the profile, or Firefox may not unlock it properly (this has been suggested for those that must either restart their OS, or force end-task FF to get it to work again).

There was one other thing people have mentioned, and I've left it separate from the rest. Take a look at THIS page for more info. On that page there is a bug report list, and THIS one seems more relevant to my issue.

Tipstaff:

Thanks for your [as always] thorough response.

I've only lately started using FF more as my default browser as IE7 is throwing up fits with certain sites that are heavy with Flash use. IE7 would completely lockup or fail to close and I read several forums that addressed this particular problem with it.

Do you use FF extensively? Do you use other browsers that give less problems?

I even tried Chrome when it first came out and really wasn't impressed at all. Perhaps once it matures a bit, it might be a decent one to use.

Re: Mozilla Firefox 3.0.4 - Fail to Close Process

Firefox almost exclusively. There are a few sites I come across that won't work in it, in which case I use IE for them. I've tried pretty much every other browser, and the only other one I like is Opera. I used to use it a lot, but got tired of having to pay for it, and switched to FF. Even though it's free now I'm just too used to FF to switch back to Opera, but if I ever had to give up Firefox, I would go to it first before I went back to IE, or any other browser for that matter.

BTW, Chrome.. sucks. It's a nice idea, but it still has a long long way to go.

Re: Mozilla Firefox 3.0.4 - Fail to Close Process

my wife's older PC was having some major lag issues with the latest FF update. I ended up uninstalling & reinstalling it. Works fine now. FF only for us unless we have no choice then use IE. For what it's worth this latest update is the first time we've had any significant issues with the browser.
