I guess this goes here, Steaming with Win Server 2003
Looked over the boards and was not sure where to type this out but picked this section.
I have started to hit the limits of my laptop and external hdd so I wanted to build and set up my own streaming server that would only myself and at most a hand full of people would have access too but would want it to be internet access.
I was thinking of using Linux at first then realized I didn't really want to learn the syntax for the commands so I got Windows Server 2003 and start to use that. I have it up and running right now, throwing all of my data onto the server now so have not tried to access it yet but I have read a bit about the file types it can service. Looks to me that it uses a service called Windows Media Services 9 which is installed and set up but that it only can stream files in windows format.
Looks to use windows media player so I would think that whatever my laptop can play that it should stream but hell if I know. Does anyone know if this type of server would be able to stream any type of file or would I need codex on both sides of the connection?
