Re: ANNOYING Download Status Page
**PROBLEM SOLVED: Thanks Tipstaff, for your help!
![]() I noticed this download screen today when I was downloading a wallpaper from Digitalblasphemy, and was like, "Well, since when was that there?" and to my dismay, it doesn't appear in my addons -- nor as an activeX -- or anything. I decided to run Hijackthis, nothing came up. AdAware, nothing came up. CCCleaner, nothing changed. AVG, nothing came up. Norton Antivirus, nothing came up. So, I was sitting rather confused thinking to myself, "I just reformatted a three weeks ago, the only time my laptop has been used is at work --" However, after spending many hours trying to remove this software, I gave up after installing Firefox and the same thing is there. This laptop is used for work purposes and only has basic software installed: The Add/Remove programs list has 12 items, so the program isn't hidden in there. My Services.msc shows nothing new, MSConfig is clean, and Taskmanager has no new services loaded (searched them all) that could possibly be this application, as they all appear legit. I'm at my wit's end here as to what to do to remove this GARBAGE from my download page! Basically, it downloads the program -- then "scans" it, taking its sweet time, then I'm allowed to use my IE to download it normally... it's like a roadblock to all downloads. Has anyone else seen this before? I have attached a screenshot of the download page. Thanks, PLEASE let me know what I can do. I'll be reformatting tomorrow night (25th) if there isn't an answer... this problem is bothering me a lot. lol >.< Last edited by ExitiosuS; May 25, 2009 at 04:21 PM. |

Re: ANNOYING Download Status Page
Seeing as you have 12 programs in Add/Remove Programs, can you list out what programs you have installed, including anti-virus?
Also, double check MSConfig, and look at your startup list. Anything in there that points to Windows\System32? |

Re: ANNOYING Download Status Page
Add/Remove Programs list:
Adobe Flash Player 10 ActiveX ATI Catalyst Install Manager FastAccess HijackThis 2.0.2 Integrated Webcam Driver MS Vis. C++ Norton Antivirus Windows Live Essentials, sign in assisstant, upload tool MS Office 2007 COD World at War And, in terms of MSConfig startup, there are only three programs listed -- one is the facial recognition suite, catalyst drivers, Live Messenger. Yeah, I keep a pretty tight ship on this laptop -- so it surprised me to goodness that this appeared when I was trying to DL a wallpaper. >.< |

Re: ANNOYING Download Status Page
After some exploration, I've discovered what that screen is...
Some time passed, when I was thinking, "This is a problem that only exists on my work laptop --" so I thought outside of the box a little bit. The only time I download things on it, for the most part, is at work or on other work networks... Apparently, it's my job's new proxy...or whatnot. As when I brought it home and decided to download a large file to test this thought, I didn't get that download screen! Phew! And I thought I had some kind of evil malware going on, upsetting the course of my life. >.< |

Re: ANNOYING Download Status Page
This makes a bit of sense. It could be that they are using some sort of proxy download manager. They can then throw an AV package on that machine as it would allow them to do virus scanning of all files, single out file types, or setup filters for files going to or from certain IPs being downloaded via the proxy (it would also allow them to throttle speeds, or block downloads of certain file types via the proxy configuration).
It could also be a tie-in with their server AV package. I know Norton has an add-on that you can get, a download manager add-on, that works in conjunction with proxy settings (at least I think that's how it works). I've only seen it with Norton IS though in relation to parental control. |
