Re: What's the best recovery software?

We use Active Undelete at my workplace. It's moderately easy to get the hang of but once we worked our way around the app we managed to recover files (with the original filenames and extensions!)from a partition on a hard drive that had been wiped twice, even though it had about 13% chance of recovering anything after our (old) IT director reformatted the hard drive of a server without backing up the files that we still needed. I haven't shopped around though - it was the first one we tried and it did everything we needed it to do.

Re: What's the best recovery software?

Active make a great suite of applications. I use a few of them, well worth a look. Nice recommendation.

Re: What's the best recovery software?

Active undelete as mentioned earlier has got to be one of the best tools out there. EZRecovery works too just not as good and RAID Reconstructor works pretty good for recovery files off of a RAID setup.

Re: What's the best recovery software?

Only thing is that the "recovery" software he's mentioned (such as Ghost) isn't data recovery related, it's image recovery related. If that's the case then programs like Acronis True Image Home 2009, Ghost, or DriveImage XML (which is free for home users) would be of more use to him.

Personally I use Acronis True Image all the time for clients machines. It allows me to make a secured recovery parition, and I image the computer into that partition. I can also install the recovery boot manager so that all a client or myself needs to do is hit F11 during bootup to bring up the boot manager, and I can re-image the machine back in no time. If the client needs a hard copy of the partition I tend to use Ghost first to backup the machine to DVD (or whatever) just in case the hard drive fails, and then use Acronis after that (which is used more for reinstalls after a Windows fail, or virus infection).

Re: What's the best recovery software?

Yeah, DriveImage XLM requires you to use a machine with an OS installed to do a backup and restore. It's a downside to the app. As you mentioned, if you have a WinPE disk you can do this, and I would suggest that you take a look at a program called Ultimate BootCD 4 Windows (UBCD for Windows)(Edit: forgot the link). It uses your own XP installation, as well as your XP install CD to create the disc for you. The great thing here is that you can customize the WinPE disc however you like just by downloading any plugins that you want.

The reason I mention UBCD4Win is that by default it includes DriveImage XML as one of the default programs.

Re: What's the best recovery software?

Things are f**ked up I have done a back up then tried restore by UBCD it completed the restore successfully but after reboot and trying to log on windows I get a message "An error has occurred press Alt+Ctrl+Del to restart" I can't even boot from the UBCD any more it freezes at specific part every time so I am installing normal Windows Vista now. I am fed up with trying to image this computer.

That is odd. There shouldn't be any interference in booting to the CD by the installed OS as they are separate things.

I'm sending something to your PM, comp.
