itunes alternative? what do you use?
buddy of mine just piked up a nice hp lappy wit a centrino core2 2.26, 4gb RAM and a 4650. this is actually his 1st computer and he wanted a hand gettn to know about it.
amazingly when i had a look at the vista x64 sp1 home premium install (no bakup disks provided) it had 90+ processes running! no wander he had been complaining about how sluggish the PC felt. needless to say we flattened it and hooked it up wit some 7 x64 RTM. now i've got him just about setup but he would like to be able to manage his ipod and i am of course steering him away from itunes which had about 10+ processes running on the old install. i think he would be alright without itunes as he does not use the itunes store. what do folks around here use? is there a favorite among the forum here or is itunes have that many advantages to it. this is new territory for me as i have never owned an ipod. any opinions on this or linked reads are appreciated |

Re: itunes alternative? what do you use?
Eh, every since I got a quad core cpu I just use windows media player for my music needs aka mp3 player. I choose the folder view in the library and just add albums that I want to listen to and play. The minimise to the taskbar and that's it.
There are a few, mediamonkey I think is one.

Re: itunes alternative? what do you use?
I love to use Winamp - it's compact, happily sits in the background or on top and works with my media buttons.
The main reason I guess is because it can be so compact; if you tell it to use windowshade mode it's slightly thinner than a window's titlebar. I haven't scouted around much but Winamp's served me well over the years.

Re: itunes alternative? what do you use?
....wait, u guys are managing the ipod from wmp and winamp? as in placing music on it? dont they have to be converted (.m4a?) i really am clueless when it come to an ipod, as ive always just had basic mp3 players on the go.
we want to be able to place mp3's (various sources, album rips and singes) from his hdd onto the ipod, possibly retrieve some of the things that were placed on the ipod by friends before he had this computer, and be able to rip a cd with a copy for the cpu hdd and the ipod. |

Re: itunes alternative? what do you use?
My bad, I missed that part. I don't own and never ever ever ever going to buy an ipod. I don't know if WMP supports it or not.

Mediamonkey works with ipod, it's a great music player even if you don't have an ipod.
Also, for linux users out there who need ipod connectivity, I use Banshee. |

![]() Roxio has the ability to save files in m4a. I haven't checked but I'd imagine Quicktime Pro has the ability to save in m4a format as it can play it and is also made by Apple. As for freeware, I haven't come across any that my friends (that own iPhones) like to use.
