What is FF doing with versions?
I use FF as my browser and all of a sudden they are pushing out different versions like it's going out of style. I used FF 2 for ever, then 3 came out and it was roughly two years before 4 came out. When 4 finally did come out, it was a major upgrade and everyone that used FF was looking forward to it. Two months later, version 5 came out and I thought it was a major security issue to warrant a complete version number and that version 4 was hosed somehow. I've now read that version 6 will be out this week and that version 7 by the end of the year.
My question is, why the new version numbers all of a sudden? In one year, they will have upgraded four different versions. Are the changes that different to warrant such a version change? Your thoughts? Me personally, I don't really care for the revisions that often. Security holes patch, totally agree that should be done but not total revision numbers for minor upgrades to something. |

Re: What is FF doing with versions?
It's just marketing. From hat I've heard, 6 has exactly the same look and feel as 5, though it does have some under the hood improvements. So basically they are chasing after Google which has already released Chrome 13 (and a preview version is already available for Chrome 15) because of those users who think along the lines of "Bigger number => better browser".

Re: What is FF doing with versions?
Maybe the company trying to catch all the rest of browsers in numbers. LOL. Indeed its a joke! What they have to do is that they could apply all the updates in 4 like 4.5 or 4.6 or 4.7 instead of 5, 6 and 7... Furthermore I am still waiting for ff x64 browser to come! (official release of course)

Re: What is FF doing with versions?
While FF upgrades have been painless so far, and the best of all other browsers I have ever used, they are going crazy with the numbers.
Still, not as annoying as that whole "web 2.0" thing.

Every Six Weeks | Future Releases
A six week cycle, not sure if rapid cycle is good or bad, though it does add some pace to arrivals that was not there before, but some people prefer long term releases with security updates.

Re: What is FF doing with versions?
Perhaps if they slowed things down they wouldn't have so many holes to patch up and not have to release a new version so often.
I'm just saying...

Re: What is FF doing with versions?
No kidding.. my problem with all of this is that we use FF as our default browser at work and we've got about 380 pc's that we need to push up dates to. This has become kind of a pain as we have web based apps we need to make sure work with newer versions.
