Firefox freezes.

I have problems with Firefox completely freezing up from time to time. I can't really see any pattern to it but it seems to happen more and more often. It just freezes and I can't do anything, it can sit like that for anything from 10 seconds up to 2-3 minutes and then it comes back and works just like normal.

I've been thinking that it might be a plugin that's causing this and I guess I'll try to disable them one by one to see if that's what it is, just wanted to check if someone else has experienced something similar.

Fully up to date W7.

In my experience 11 out of 10 times it has something to do with flash.
Be it an ad, or video or something flash related.

Re: Firefox freezes.

I get the same and I would also say it is something to do with Flash. I get regular crashes when Flash content is on the page. Especially if I'm playing a video in one window and then open another window which has some Flash content. Sometimes closing the plugin-container.exe in task manager recovers Firefox.

This seems to be a very widespread issue because it's been happening for months and many people complain about it on Mozilla's Firefox Feedback form.

Re: Firefox freezes.

I tried closing the plugin-container but it didn't help, at least not this first time I tried it.

Another problem I've noticed is that videos on youtube quite often stops and I can't get them forward, only start over from the beginning. Videos that work just perfectly in IE9.

Good to know I'm not alone then, that means it's not likely to be a local problem.

Yeah, other times the video will just turn into a black screen with all UI gone lol. Other times I can only see a !.
Was it ever that Flash did not have a problem? Junk.

As much as I like making fun of Apple, I wouldn't seriously blame them for not including flash support, if that (buggy) was the real reason behind it.

Re: Firefox freezes.

Yeah the plugin-container.exe thing doesn't always work. Often it will just close all firefox windows along with it but sometimes the flash content itself will crash and leave placeholders on the pages. It's not a massive problem for me as I can just restart Firefox and it will open on the pages it was on before closing.

I am using Aurora now (Firefox 8) and the situation seems improved although I still get the occasional crash.

Re: Firefox freezes.

This is starting to get really old and I'll trash Firefox soon if this isn't fixed.

If mozilla is blaming flash for this then why isn't the same thing happening with other browsers?

Yahoo mail is the worst. EVERY time I go into there it locks up from anything between 1 and a few minutes.

The problem is Firefox and nothing else..

Re: Firefox freezes.

The latest version of firefox is frequently freezing up on numerous machines... without having anything installed..

in fact... the most recent machine i installed it on, it proceeds through the installation... choosing to not import anything and keep things clean and not install anything else..

get to the end where you click finish and launches firefox for the first time.

i had to sit there for nearly 3 minutes waiting for firefox to respond as it loaded the window.. and sat there... forever...... just doing nothing..... windows detected that it wasn't "responding" but i let it sit and waited.

I don't even have any other programs on the clean install of windows 7 x64.... and the machine is by no means slow.

I've been seeing this occur for the last 6 months give or take.

Re: Firefox freezes.

I've updated both firefox and flash a number of times since this problem started and no change..

The strange thing is, sometimes it can go a few days without this happening at all and then suddenly it happens all the time and I can't find any reason whatsoever as to why.

I haven't tested with plugins disabled but I might just to see if it helps.

Re: Firefox freezes.

Most times it's a plugin or addon that causes things like this (right now Adblock Plus is giving me grief), so yeah, either try running it with all addons disabled, or running it in Safe Mode by holding the shift key down when launching Mozilla.

Mind you, plugins/addons are not always the culprit. I've found that antivirus and antimalware can do the same thing.

Re: Firefox freezes.

I wonder if this can be due to a major memory leak in FF, or if it is in the plugin handler. When I start FF it uses about 100 MB and it runs smoothly and this problem doesn't occur that often. After a day of running it starts to get slow, freezes more frequently and it uses about 500 MB.

I don't know, updating now. We'll see.

Most annoying. It didn't update internally, I had to download manually and update it. Gonna run this a few days and see if it's better.

I've always kept both FF and Flash up to date but the problem still went on, until about a month ago when it suddenly stopped. Don't know what changed but it haven't happened since then at all... knock on wood.
