OS/2 Tweak Question
Can someone explain this tweak about deleting something about os/2? I read it on anothe rsite but parts of it confused me, so, yea. I've used regedit before so I'm not that stupid, but, can someone give me a "dummies guide" on how to do it. Thanks.

Win2k, and:
"POSIX, OS/2 disabling You could free up a small amount of memory by disabling support for these 2 subsystems. This is a highly important tweak as essentially no other methods work now. Why? Windows 2000 File Protection System recreates renamed/deleted system files. So while the method of renaming the Posix & Os/2 files may have worked in Windows NT4, it will not work in Windows 2000. If you need support for either of these, you can simply ignore the sections regarding to deleting that subsystem. You may want to backup the registry before doing this, or at least export the affected registry keys. Click on Start, Run, type in regedit & hit Enter. Go to [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\OS/2 Subsystem for NT] & Delete all subkeys. Now go to [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Session Manager\Environment] & Delete the Os2LibPath entry. Finally, go to [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Session Manager\SubSystems] & Delete the Optional, Os2 & Posix entries. Reboot your machine for the changes to take effect. NOTE – As mentioned earlier, Windows 2000 will recreate renamed system files so search for the files that were supposedly "renamed", there most likely exists the original file, plus the renamed one in your System directory. Delete the renamed versions." |

Open the Registry Editor, by typing this command REGEDT32 (in win2k you have to use that for this reg hack, not the REGEDIT)
locate HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\SubSystems Click on the key (folder) SubSystems, at the right pane window you will see a value name "Optional", Double-click on it, you'll get a pop-up window "Edit Multi-String", use your cursor to highlight the info in the "Value Data" window and hit Delete key. Reboot |

ist i like you to check ...
do you have these two keys in your registry? [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\OS/2 Subsystem for NT] [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Session Manager\Environment]---> Os2LibPath ---------------------------------- go to the.. CurrentControlSet not the ControlSet001/002/003. backup/export all the keys 1st. |

since the CurrentControlSet key is missing from your registry,
if you like to know what's the next key you can use for your next registry tweaks.. and what's actually your last known good control set key... go to HKLM\SYSTEM\Select at the right pane, pls give me the No.value of the "x".. 1 or 2?? "Current"=dword:0000000X "Default"=dword:0000000X "LastKnownGood"=dword:0000000X |

Default : RED_DWORD : 0x1 ControlSet001 is the last control set you booted with and its your Default control set, Use this key for any tweak you may have in future. --------------------------- LastKnownGood : RED_DWORD : 0x2... ControlSet002 is the control set that last successfully booted Windows (last known good control set) --------------------------- its actually can be changed at every boot But i dont think it'll change in your case. you can check back at the "Select" subkey just to make sure before do the tweaking. |

O yea, another question. Should I delete the OS/2 Subsystem for NT and/or the folders under/in it?

here use this... cut/paste then save as.... anyname.reg and import it.
REGEDIT4 ;for win2k - Max Powerz only. ;disabling OS/2 subsystem. [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\OS/2 Subsystem for NT] [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Se ssion Manager\SubSystems] "Os2"=- "Optional"=hex(7):50,00,6f,00,73,00,69,00,78,00,00 ,00,00,00 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Se ssion Manager\Environment] "Os2LibPath"=- ------------------------------------- note -- backup/export all registry keys before applying it. for others..** hold on** (replace the ControlSet001 with CurrentControlSet.) if report the file is not reg format--- modifying your registry manually. after importing it, reboot then go back to the below steps, i like to see whether or not the Optional's Value Data is empty. if not, redo it manaully. (since i've prepared the above reg flie from XP and i like to make sure) Quote:

you can also use a .reg file (by creating one) to make any change to your registry.. and its the easiest way and to protect some mistake that can occur when you do it manually.
but never mind on the reg file then just want to make an easy way for you. okay so have the CurrentControlSet. use the key for your registry tweaks.(from now on) yes, you can delete the OS/2 Subsystem for NT locate and delete it : HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\OS/2 Subsystem for NT |

Hey thanks, 4.9K once again, hehe. It went down about 50 points because I stopped useing omegas drivers. Coool, Oh yea, do you know naything about specifying your L2 cache in that reg key? Will this boost performance at all or does it matter?

MS states that the SecondLevelDataCache parameter is erroneous and that the second level cache is recognized by the NT/W2K/XP and is fully utilized regardless of the setting.
power/advanced users, tweaker programs/web site says.. you can get significantly better performance if this is set to match the actual amount of L2 cache. me.. thiss up to you. so how do you think, still want to check it out(yourself)? if yes, get a bench mark b4 and after so you kown. if you want to keep the tweak or not.
