Page file (sometimes called a Paging file or a Swap file) is Virtual Memory.
Quote:
Your computer can address memory beyond what is physically installed on the system. This non-physical memory is called virtual memory, and it's implemented by using a piece of your hard disk that's set up to emulate physical memory. This hard disk storage is actually a single file called a page file, sometimes called a paging file or a swap file. When physical memory is full, Windows XP makes room for new data—either program code or document contents—by taking some infrequently-used data that's currently in memory and swapping it out to the page file.

What is Virtual Memory?
A program instruction on an Intel 386 or later CPU can address up to 4GB of memory, using its full 32 bits. This is normally far more than the RAM of the machine. (The 32nd exponent of 2 is exactly 4,294,967,296, or 4 GB. 32 binary digits allow the representation of 4,294,967,296 numbers — counting 0.) So the hardware provides for programs to operate in terms of as much as they wish of this full 4GB space as Virtual Memory, those parts of the program and data which are currently active being loaded into Physical Random Access Memory (RAM). The processor itself then translates (‘maps’) the virtual addresses from an instruction into the correct physical equivalents, doing this on the fly as the instruction is executed. The processor manages the mapping in terms of pages of 4 Kilobytes each - a size that has implications for managing virtual memory by the system

XP usually takes up 4GB you see (w/ small file size apps), and I've got the OS on a 5GB partition and I keep running out of space. Does anyone have any advice to what I should do?

Otherwise as of saturday I will be removing partition and extending it to 10GB.

5Gb is very small for a XP patition, if you going to change it; change it to 20 gb atleast
Btw you can tell XP to put the swap on another partition or even another Hdd.

It's a 40GB - 35/5MB partition. I think I will up it to 10GB. 20GB maybe inc. all apps but I install all my apps onto a different drive.

Can u alter the size of a swap file? How do I put it onto another drive?

Yes you can , you can find it by rightclicking my (yours) Computer\system properties\ advanced\performance options\virtualmemory - change, here you can change the swap to where you would like it to be & how big it has to be , if you like to have it a fixed size(less cluttering on your HD)
just fill in the same numbers in "initial size" & "maximum size", but do not make a fixed size swap to small tough!! 1 gb = minimum imo

I find that my system works quite well with a swap file size of 768 MB. That's with a system with RAM of 512 MB.

Is the size of the file determined by ure RAM?
