hehehe....putting a paging file in ram...

although, the way that XP works, it WOULD help, considering XP pages to it even when it doesn't need to...which is buggin me, I want conservative swap file usage!

Yeah, it's just a registry setting, disablepagingexecutive and largesystemcache...but it still pages regardless, just not as much as default. Man...in Win98se, I could enable conservativeswapfileusage and NEVER use my paging file...mmmm...

Heh...oops...wasn't quite thinking...would there be any other uses to the ram drive? I'm using it currently for the cache of my browser. It just makes some of the uses difficult since the ram erases itself on each reboot. Let me know if you have any ideas. Thanks.

Schweet. Just out of curiosity, does anyone have an easy way to make a RAMDRIVE that will load information from my hard drive automatically upon boot and write the changes to the hard drive upon shut down so I essentially have an extremely fast, extremely small hard drive that happens to have a backup on my real hard drive? I've got several uses in mind for something like this, including doing video editing for small clips there.. oh, I have 512mb of DDRRAM.... Thanks to anyone who can help!

It's easier to crap those tweaks fromTWEAKXP.

And there are also good explanations for each tweak, how will those effect to your system performance.

Don't forget that defragmenting your hard drive can do more for your paging file performance than a thousand small tweaks to the usage settings

Something peeps might find useful if they have to register/unregister dll & ocx files...puts it on right click, just copy & paste this(below line) to note pad & save as .reg
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\dllfile\shell\Register]

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\dllfile\shell\Register\command]@="regsvr32 %1"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\dllfile\shell\Unregister]

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\dllfile\shell\Unregister\command]@="regsvr32 /u %1"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ocxfile\shell\Register]

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ocxfile\shell\Register\command]
@="regsvr32 %1"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ocxfile\shell\UnRegister]

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ocxfile\shell\UnRegister\command]
@="regsvr32 /u %1"

XTEQ seems to have great tweaks (newest version out 6.3)

I personally like to doo things my self,

I look to these 2 sites

http://www.xptuneup.com
and
http://www.tweakxp.com

Also there are serveral guides no tweaking XP's services, which have a great impact on the whole

I'd recommend the The 256 megs tweak. I also have 384 megs and I tried both. I found the 256 megs tweak to perform better in my case. But it couldn't hurt to try them both, yourself. See which you like better. A reboot is all you need to switch between configs after you import the corresponding .reg file.

I just wanted to note here that when I did the Large System Cache tweak and the Disable Paging Executive tweak together I received this error message.
Stop 0x000000ED Error Message When Volume on IDE Drive with Caching Enabled Is Mounted
It may have been just because of the first tweak but I was able to reproduce it. The SP apparently fixes this.
It is addressed in the Microsoft knowledge base at http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;315403

I recently took out 512mb of my ddr to put into my other system so I was only left with 512mb but my caching was set high from tweaknow and I forgot to change it to a lower setting, so people who do that, lol make sure u lower the setting first because your system tends to chunk in a game

i Think, the reason for that is..
standard xp will work okay on every machines that meet its minimum requirement,
since all have diffs in hardwares and also for hows/whats user intention to use XP for!,
xp(or all windows) allow us to adjust it and most of it will be in windows registry so that it'll work better on our machine.
there should be no standard for "tweak"

i hope it's okay to post on this old thread..

if you happen to always disable the following services in Windows XP Pro like mine,
or perhaps you need/like to do a new installation very often. you might find this useful....
