System Specs

I have spent many hours digging into registry settings related to networking/broadband optimization. The more time I've spent the more I've begun to realise the oh so boring truth that Windows XP handles by far most things automatically just right (or right enough) with close to no manual tweaking necessary on any normally behaving broadband connection.

I used to use the little tweak tool found at www.speedguide.net, but after a while I started to realise that it too does tweak more things than is really necessary. It also handles a setting called TcpWindowSize in a bit of a lazy manner.

The only tweak that really helps me right now and that I know would help most users is to increase the MaxConnectionsPerServer registry setting (XP/2000) above the default value of 2. That affects how many files can be downloaded from a web page simultaneously, affecting browsing as well as and web downloading efficiency. It has no effect on separate downloader tools or any other part of your internet useage. I've picked the value of 9 but anyone might want to experiment with different numbers. Too high a number might actually slow down browsing if the connection cannot keep up, or the web server you are browsing to as well for that manner.

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Internet Settings]
"MaxConnectionsPerServer"=dword:00000009

There is one other setting that I know could help speedy connections and that is the previously mentioned TcpWindowSize registry setting(also called RWIN). But it's a bit hairier than just changing a setting to any given number. For those who don't mind getting their hands dirty I recommend reading up on it on a good info site like dslreports tweaking FAQ's. http://www.dslreports.com/faq/tweaks/5.%20RWIN On my connection that is 2Mbit on a good day, the default value works just fine. But I guess that people with crazy 10Mbit connections or otherwise special cases might well want to look into this. That is, at least if they are oftenly doing heavy downloading of some kind. To most regular broadband users I would recommend not touching this setting at all.

At least for Windows XP I nowadays look at any broadband tweaking tool with great suspicion.
