Need advice on a good download manager software
Preferably a freeware without spyware/adware.
If none, paying versions are also fine. Thanks. EDIT: spelling |

yeah, i thought getright is quite good as well but a lot of people have different opinions. Honestly, i haven't used other download managers so i can't really compare it with others.

Give it a try, it's really good for being free. |

http://www.stardownloader.com/ - free and Pay versions, no complaints noted in alt.comp.freeware - and they're dead nuta against anything in the slightest bit unwholesome.
http://metaproducts.com/mp/mpProducts_Detail.asp?id=18 - Download Express - free, with some pro features - not much of a "manager" but a great no nonsense downloader - I use it! If you want a MANAGER, then you need their other one, Mass Downloader. http://www.xi-soft.com/default.htm - Net Transport, able to catch some streaming protocols - look around for 1.87 (Freeware) or 1.90 (Free/Pro) - in 1.92, free mode is rather badly NAGGED! http://www.yanew.com/english.htm DL Expert - rather old now, but in it's day, redirect handling was, and probably still IS, more competent than most others http://www.freshdownload.com/ Freshdevices stuff, no ads, no spyware, no charge This software has ONE price, your email, and an affiliate ad loaded email sent each time ANY of the products are updated, not just the one you registered - to be fair, I have not found any other spam attributable to them, so I'd say they play it fair and square. I'm not comfortable with freedownloadmanager.org - they popped up out of nowhere, there's no screenshot, and the website is a bit odd - rather fake-looking quotes, and not much real substance - I fear it has the air of something that is being built to go shareware, and that's not the kind of freeware I'll rely on, and I would never buy shareware that originated in that manner. |

It seems that the metaproduct download express is quite good. So it's free and no adware/spyware right??
EDIT:hmm.....star downloader also looks very good.....similar to getright IMO. It also says no spyware/adware, is that true? |

I recommend Getright, but since I left 56K world, I've never used it. I just use the built in "Download Manager" in Opera.

The only real points against Download Express:
1. It has no management or queueing facilities 2. Restarting is a little clumsy - you go to "Incomplete Downloads" in its Start Menu group 3. It has a habit of trying to download "counter.exe" - in the end you generally have to disable EXE from automatic collection, and Rigt-Click - Downlaod with Download Express for any you do want downloaded. 4. It's poor at tracking redirects, opt-out of auto-grabbing by holding SHIFT when clicking a link that is redirected - sourceforge downloads always need this! The good points: 4 selectable download speeds, settable for threads and limit (last one is no limit). Supports proxy setting. I believe it passes the IE referrer, and works in places that some others don't - it generally succeeds even where they say DON'T use a download manager. |
