I'm getting HAMMERED!!!
I must have made a mistake putting up a game server and listing it on Gamespy for others to play.
![]() Now, when the server isn't running (and maybe when it IS) my server computer is getting hammered from all over the world to the tune of 2-4 pings PER SECOND!!! You read that right!!! My McAfee Firewall is going NUTS!!! (That's why I'm posting in the Software section.) Almost everyone of these attempts to access my computer is going for Port 6881. A few are going for other Ports, but 6881 is the main target. I left the computer off all day long while I was at work, and, when I got home I started it up and all the hammering started again right off the bat. Not only is this totally annoying, it makes that computer almost useless to open and close programs. That's because the CPU is jumping up and down between 15 - 60 % usage constantly. So....here's the question: What is the best way to put a stop to all this activity? (Short of leaving the computer off.) BTW, that's also the computer that's registered for my Comcast Cable Internet. |

I suppose that your IP is fixed ??? Then Ask your ISP to change your IP .

Well, I just put a good stop to it for now.
I had configured my router to use DMZ for the game server. I just went in and Disabled the DMZ and my software firewall no longer has to hold them off at the pass. I'll have to work up a better solution for the server. I think I need to find out exactly which ports the game needs and then, maybe, this unwanted traffic won't show up. |

You do realize that your IP, if it hasn't changed, is still being hammered. I bet if you took at look at your routers log it will have a ton of activity on those ports. I would get your ISP to release and renew your IP just to be safe. In fact, I've seen cable internet companies in particular lock peoples accounts up for a week for something like this. In a few cases they thought that these people were using their connection as file servers, and some were suspected in having a virus that was attacking the network. Both situations, of course, was not the case, yet they still locked up their accounts none the less.
BTW: is your GameSpy account logged in all the time? If so, try logging out. |

But, Comcast did assign a static IP address. Since that's the IP address that the gamers see, I'm sure there are dirtbags who will go to the GameSpy servers just to get good IP addresses in order to do something just like this. They probably sell the IP addresses. I can release/renew my IP address all day long on the router, but it won't change. That is, unless I contact Comcast to request a change. |

With comcast everytime you power down your modem your IP changes. That is atleast for me
i have comcast also. That would be one way to completely remove the issue.
