Best freeware RAM optimizer?
Right now I'm using FreeRAM XP Pro, is there anything better out there?

Not sure if it works under WinXP.. but when I used to use a ram
"optimizer" (just a ram cleaner), i used one called MaxMem.. tiny memory footprint, did the job perfectly for me.

Hey, Redon. What are you looking for? A program that cleans out unneeded files from the ram? Or are you looking for something to defragment the ram? Cuz there are programs that do those things. What are you looking for?

I don't know about WinXP, but in Win98se when I used the "unload DLL's" tweak in CacheMan, it fubarred my multimedia keyboard funtions within 10 minutes after boot-up. Simple funtions like forward and backward through music in MusicMatch would quit working with the keyboard's buttons, so I turned it off.
Maybe I'm just dense or something, but that X-teq program looks too daunting to me, way too many tweaks that could get ya in trouble, IMO. But I haven't looked at it since I was running 98se. Have they simplified it? |

Well, if you are still using Windows 98se then you are SERIOUSLY missing out on some stability. I don't know if you are still on 98...but if you are I believe you should make a quick switch. Cuz there's no point in using 98se anymore. Oh, if anyone thinks so then go to www.tomshardware.com . I believe that they did a review on whether XP or 98se or 2000 was better for gaming. The difference was so miniscule that it wasn't worth it to use 98se. Just thought I'd add my two cents.

Hey DriveEuro, the program I currently use, frees and defragments RAM. It's supposed to optimize with virtual memory for speed etc etc blah blah blah. The problem I have with it is that it takes a good 40+ seconds or so on startup to get loaded and start working. Until then, it's snore city!

Oops, sorry I guess my post wasn't clear (I've been breathing too much of that dang grill soap at ClownBurger
)I'm running XP now. I have been for about 3 weeks. I'm just wondering if any quick-tweak proggies actually increase system performance, because so far, I'm stable as can be, everything seems to be working just fine with DX9 and the Cat 3.0c's ("C" for certified) except the little nigglings that I mentioned in the "problem" thread for those newest Cat's. My sound doesn't skip, nothing crashes..etc. X-teq just seemed to have way too many USELESS tweaks that I decided not to use it because it's hard to determine what's useful and what's useless within it. I'm looking for a system-wide tweaker that is geared for performance tweaks and not just a bunch of GUI tweaks mixed in with the performance ones. Anyone know of one like that? Or, since I'm so stable, should I even bother? I DID see that thread with the registry tweaks, but I prefer to keep any screwing around in registry to a minimum. I'm kinda tired of re-formatting all the time, ya know? |

Hooah! Another win98se user!
I agree. It's as stable as any other WinXP system I've tried (and i've tried a lot of them. Hell, every other computer in my house uses WinXP.) and -- imho -- still has a faster Bootup, Shutdown and Restart (oh i'm sorry, you guys don't have quick-restart =). Long live 98se!

Oh, well, when Ma and Pa's computer comes with XP you can hook it up quite nice to yourself also.

I was rock-solid stable in 98se and I'm rock-solid stable in XP. Probably because I don't overclock. Either that or I just damn good at setting up PC's.

There are still too many great games I haven't played yet, that are a hassle to run, or will not run at all on XP. When I upgrade to XP, it will be in a completely new rig. Stabilty is directly related to internal housekeeping.

I've been running Cacheman on my XP machine for a while now and it is perfect. No more wasted ram.
