AC97 noise...?!

I'm playing a lot with Cubase SX these days, and I noticed the AC97 input (Line In) has a terrible noise level...how come?...and can I reduce it some how?...I allredy reduced the AC97 input level to the half, but there is still a lot of noise...I also tried to disconnect the cable (comming from Digital Drumms) from the Line In input, but the noise was still there, so the noise is not comming from my input suorce (drums)...

Greatful for help...

For me the noise is at -60 and it's quite loud, but I guess that isn't much someone can do about this...

btw. -60 is the best AC97 can do at all (typical noise for it is -60...-50) however you should keep in mind that when you are listening to that you also hear noise from output chips (e.g. ac97 again or i2s codec etc...) + noise from your amplifier (which is typically much louder then -60dB etc.).. also when you leave input jacks unconnected you've got more noise from power supply so it is not correct measurement too... for correct one you shoud "short-cut" input at least...

Ok

I understand that there are other noises added to the AC97 one, but if I mute the computer channel in my mixer I only listen a real low noise (from amplifier + mixer). If I was using a the input in a livedrive (is2) would the noise be much lower or not?
