Can't record with ASIO drivers. Help!

Hi all,

I decided to use the KX asio drivers with Sonar 6, but unfortunately
I just can't record at all. (I use a 5.1 Live SB under XP)

Sonar recognize the asio drivers in the "Audio" panel and I guess the setting
is correct: 48000 mhz / 16bit etc... (my vsti plugins works perfect).

So I checked the mixer options and tried some settings, but I just can't get any
signal at all in Sonar when I try to record.

Please, can someone help me ?

Thanks

Re: Can't record with ASIO drivers. Help!

For ASIO recording, a custom DSP config is best, but, with the default DSP config, you use the Ins and Outs page of kmixer to enable inputs for ASIO recording.

You should also be aware of the "ASIO Mapping Issue" that affects Live! 5.1 cards.

See the following:
Lex Nahumury's "How to setup Cubase SX with kX" Newbie guide (includes some info about the ASIO mapping issue)

Re: Can't record with ASIO drivers. Help!

Thanks for your quick response.

I took an eye on this huge and well done documentation
but I feel confused among these tricked connexions.

First I'd like to know if my card has the ASIO mapping issue.
In the epilog panel (or asio panel in FXpro) I have the following connexions:

[4010] asio 0
[4011] asio 1

and so on until:

[401f] asio 15

So do you think my card has the ASIO mapping issue (I think it doesn't but I'm not sure) ?

I noticed that the DSP starts the connexions between epilog and prolog at asio 6.
So I configured my Sonar's audio track with:
kxASIO SB0102 [b880] Kx In 06
kxASIO SB0102 [b880] Kx Out 06
Now I can get signal and I can record some sounds but but I can't
get any sound at all in playback mode.

There's a screenshot of my DSP (attach file).
Could you say to me what should be the correct connexion ?

Thanks

Re: Can't record with ASIO drivers. Help!

Yes, all Live! 5.1 cards are subject to the mapping issue (Note: It only affects recording, not playback). If you look at the dump of epilog, you will see that asio1 and asio2 (KX_FX2(0x1) and KX_FX2(0x2)) are not used (within any of the DSP instructions).

As for input, kX In 6/7 would be correct for (stereo) recording from AC97, but again the mapping issue could effect this.

I suggest using kX Out 0/1 or 2/3 for playback, as those lead to your front speakers (via FxBus 0/1 or 2/3), and depending on your speaker system and config, you may not be able to hear audio from the other kx outs (without using a custom config (Note: 6/7 leads to center/lfe)).

Note that the above also directs the audio from those inputs to your speakers. If you do not want that behavior, disconnect the connections between prolog and xrouting (at xrouting, so that the connections between prolog and epilog remain).

Re: Can't record with ASIO drivers. Help!

Thanks again for your explanation but it sounds a quite complicated for
me and I'm not sure I finally could get a good result.
Moreover, all my work has been recorded in 44100 hz, so I would have to resample all that stuff in 48000 hz in order to use ASIO.

Actually the main reason I wanna use ASIO drivers is because the low latency
they allow with the vst plugins. Otherwise the MME drivers works fine for audio
playback/record and they're well synchronized with MIDI.

So I find a tip to control vst plugins (in standalone mode and using ASIO) through Sonar (using MME).
I do that with both MIDI Yoke and ASIO4All. It seems to work properly (low latency on the plugins) and Sonar remain stable.
For now I think it's the simpliest way.

Re: Can't record with ASIO drivers. Help!

It is not that complicated once you get the hang of it, but whatever works for you is good

BTW: If your host supports it, you can also use Kernel Streaming, which should give you a lower latency then using the MME driver (though if you are using ASIO4ALL, it is basically the same thing (AFAIK)).

Re: Can't record with ASIO drivers. Help!

Thanks for the tip, I'll see that.

One last thing:
What are the SB cards (pci) which have NO asio mapping issue, is there any list somewhere ?

Re: Can't record with ASIO drivers. Help!

Any (supported) card that is not a Live! 5.1, but if you are going to get a different (compatible) card, I would suggest getting a 10k2 model (e.g. any supported Audigy model).

You can find a list of product names and models numbers here: List of Sound Blaster Products

And here is a list showing which models are compatible with kX (though I am not sure it is fully up to date): kX Soundblaster Compatibility List
